Pinking of DOOOOOM!

Post by minivin »

well, after being told by the BMW dealer to dump Optimax to see if the pinking went.... well it still pinks like a good damn snare drummer of the Royal Signals Reg. Band. got the bike booked in for the 6th to be inspected under the warrenty to determine what is wrong.

Initial thoughts are carb imbalance and/or injectors phased-out, unlikely issue is igntion slipped but hay-hoe.

Bikes done 17k miles now and still burns 400 - 500ml of oil per 1k mile.

Any other ideas to present to the dealer comeuth the day of reckoning????

There's a nice Honda SP1 down the road...... :D

Don't bank on the dealers fitting the right plugs, have a look yourself.

pinking now solved after the 18k service, no explanation giving to what it was (oh thanks for the future fault diagnosis info.!) so it could have been anything touched during the service.... :?

Well at least it's sorted but I'd ask to see the workshop job sheet, especially as they probably charged you enthusiasticaly for the pleasure.

It may be that they didn't actually find a fault and that just a tune up, throttle balance and (as mooted earlier ) possibly replacing incorrect or faulty plugs has resolved the problem.

Good that it's fixed, is it the same model of plug now as before the service ? and is it any smoother in general ?

Also be interested to hear if your oil consumption changes ....

unknown about the spark plugs, however she be much smoother and was cruising beautifully at a 100 with panniers full of camping kit, a 3 man tent on the back and a MPS tail pack on top with sleeping back and lots of whitworth KING DICK spanners (or was it big dick  ) and sockets weighing the bike down. fuel economy shot up as well coming back from the rally even though I sat at 70/80 most of it down country lanes so very confused :?

Pinking can be expensive, it cost me two pistons and a barrel. Spend £30 and fit a fuel pressure regulator from a K1200.

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread but would anyone have any ideas on excessive pinking? I've tried different brands of petrol , and currently have done valve clearances, balanced throttle bodies, new plugs( whats everyone using @the moment?) The bike is running better than it has done in the last 2 years, but intermittently around 4k rpm under load(ie hard acceleration) can pink . I put it down to the very warm summer but temps have dropped considerably recently and although not as bad still inclined to pinking. There is nearly 40k miles on the clock. I changed the inlet manifolds recently as one was nearly split through.
Any ideas or will i have to finally (for the first time book it into a dealer :( ) Nigel B

We ride in very hot weather and don't suffer at all from pinking on either bike. Having said that we often use 98 octane unleaded which is available at all petrol stations here.
It gets so hot that I get loads of mechanical noise from my bike (7000 miles), I have cured that by changing from 5W40 oil to 5W50 fully synthetic.
