I have been looking at a 11S of 2003 vintage, it is a very nice example but I am concerned that it has a black engine, I thought they where fitted to later models, does anyone know what year they started fitting the please?

Can not remember ever seeing a black engined r1100s. Is it a possibility that it has been painted by a previous owner. Bearing in mind the r1100 was superceded by the R1200 in the mid noughties. The 1100 engine did not have much plans for it after 2003 other than twin spark.

I was offered a new 1100s (blue ) with a black engine before I bought my BCR in 2005. Coopers (or Mill BMW as it was then) had one in the showroom but didn't have a BCR. So, they were available with a black engine but not sure of the year they were manufactured or how long the one I was offered had been in the showroom

Looking at the parts catalogue, a replacement engine was available in black or silver all the way through production, from '96 to '05.

My Dyson colour scheme (grey and mandarin - the best colour) 2004 R1100S has a black engine. They were certainly an option in 2003 (when I bought my first 1100S) and 2004 (when this one was built) but don't know if they were always available.

For what it's worth OEM Parts Online show silver and black engine blocks are available for all model years (I know, sad isn't it).

On a related topic, anyone know which bikes might have a black, short (365mm) Paralever arm?
