R1100S wide rear wheel

Post by Betelguese »

Hi All, I've just bought a 5.5 inch rear wheel for a K1200RS in the hope it would fit my R1100s. It doesn't :? due mainly to the lack of rear disk mountings. I realise now I should have done the research first  Anyone know if the wider wheels from other models do actually fit? I don't suppose I could be so lucky as to just fit the K1200Rs rear disk and that would sort it? What are the chances of picking up a wider back wheel for mine? The do look so much more purposeful. Thanks.

Hello mate,
The R1100S also came with a 5.5 rear wheel. They do come up on eBay from time to time.

Thanks Neil, yes I should have clarified that I'm aware it was an option on the 1100S, not seen any around though as yet. I see Motorworks have them listed at £285 when available ( haven't checked with them as that's way too dear). They also seem to have the ABS and non ABS versions listed separately as if they are not interchangeable. Anyone know if that's the case? Good to know they come up on eBay from time to time, I'll keep a look out.

I was trying to swap over wheels on my R1100S about 15 years ago, and if my failing memory serves me right, the ABS and non ABS wheels are not interchangable. You need to replace like-for-like.

Paul
You really need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.

Max BMW part cattledog is your friend.

can search all the models, or the part number, or enter your VIN and work from there.

I went through this a good while back , what year is the bike . My '99 version has a thick ABS ring so i'm guessing it's just the disc mounting posts are machined shorter. I think an abs wheel will suit non abs as long as you have the abs ring as a disc spacer. The later bikes my have a different set up.

Thanks guys all useful info. I have found our a bit more now so apparently abs and non abs wheels were different prior to 2002 - probably due to the thicker abs ring as Nab has pointed out. After that they used the same part number. Mine is a 2002 but as suggested I could just use the abs ring as a spacer.

In addition it seems the R1100r Roxster uses the same 5.5 inch rim as the later abs and non abs bikes. So one of those would work for me too.
