Removed the front shock for a rebuild tomorrow and found the bottom end looking like this. Not sure what has happened to cause that, ideas anyone?
Seems like I was only a pothole away from disaster. Cannot see what would have caused the bottom to wear like that as there is nothing to rub against.

Re: Shock Horror
Oh boy, you were lucky. Is it a sheer fracture, if so I can only think it must have been a pot hole.

So when is this 'Old enough to know better' supposed to kick in?

Re: Shock Horror
It seems a little corroded now so could have happened a while ago but looks like it may have been a pothole looking at the damage to the whole bracket including the knurled nut.

Hi,
I seem to recall that the Ohlins shock on my 12s was in a similar (not quite as bad) state when it was rebuilt a couple of years ago. Guy said it was a reaction of unsuitable materials by BMW. He replaced all the bottom end of my shock with std Ohlins parts and its still fine now.
Peter.

Re: Shock Horror
Anyone got a spare front shock for the 12S in their garage? Seems like mine is beyond economical repair

Re: Shock Horror
Small update, purchased a Hagon front shock from Motobins as the Ohlins was beyond economical repair according to a specialist. The Hagon looks to be good quality and has the same adjustments as the Ohlins. The only thing different in the construction was the lack of allen key socket in the top rod to allow you to hold it whilst you tighten the top mounting nut. Bit of a ball ache and doesn't help when setting preload on the spring either as the top mounting rod turns with the castellated nut! Overall though, easy to fit and looks good with a nice red spring. I'll report back on the feel once I get it set up.
Didn't matter too much that I missed the Chris Walker trackday at Cadwell either as so did Chris. I was chatting to him this morning and he is currently in a body brace after fracturing a vertebrae into three pieces and breaking his nose. He is understandably in a bit of discomfort but in true racer style hopes to be ok for a go at Brands Hatch on the sidecar outfit he now races in 8 weeks
That as long as they get the outfit rebuilt as he snapped the front end off in the crash!

Upped the preload on the spring by a couple of turns and the bike is handling very well. Need a trackday to see how good it is but its promising so far. Going to get the suspension set up by Etto Motorcycles near Nottingham in the next couple of weeks and the TB's balanced on 15th so alls looking good at the moment. 81,000 miles and still a great bike.
