Lifetime driving ban

Just watching one of these police programmes, where they've nicked a guy who they reckon could face a lifetime driving ban.
I only caught the tail end so didn't see what happened.
Call me naïve, but I didn't know there was such a thing.
I mean you hear of drivers who kill other people while drunk, who get off lightly with a few years ban, couple of months inside and a hefty fine.
So what the hell do you have to do to get a lifetime driving ban
