So the long dark winter nights over the next 3 months are to be utilised partly in sourcing a new two up tourer. I have just sold this years tour bike which was not up for the fully loaded 2 up stuff when things got unsettled. The stylish Griso has gone but I have been that impressed with the build quality and character of the 8v engine CARC bikes that I am now researching the Stelvio which gets brilliant reviews especially the "Aprillia refined" 2011 onwards units.
Unfortunately there seems to be very few private ones for sale of this vintage. In the main they are dealer ones. A brand new one with alu panniers, engine bars, sump guard, extra lights, touring screen, abs, traction control, 32litre tank, sat nav can be had for £11k. Looks tempting, that price may even drop further as Piaggio has pulled the plug on the 8v carc bikes.
Bit of a heavy fcuker but which two up tourer that offers comfort is lightweight?
Anyone had a shot on one?

3 months to find a new bike.
Fiat Panda.
Fiat Scudo (with speedblock, pipe carrier, reversing sensors, reversing camera, tow bar, some new rust and Fake Plumber logo)
started out with nothing, still have most of it left.

There is one here and been there for a while. Remember seeing it there some months ago when I was in the area.

There were cam follower issues on earlier 8V engines.boxerscott wrote:I am now researching the Stelvio which gets brilliant reviews especially the "Aprillia refined" 2011 onwards units.

At first, Piaggio and other independent experts denied there was a significant problem, but as more and more bikes started failing, it became generally acknowledged that it's not if your cam followers will fail, but when.
The problem was the flat tappets fitted to earlier models, and something to do with the hardening process.
The outcome is usually catastrophic.
Moto Guzzi issued a lifetime parts only warranty on bikes affected, so that's a clear enough acknowledgement of the problem.
They also changed the design of later engines, which now have roller tappets.
I think the rule of thumb is that if you buy a post 2013 bike, you're OK.
There's loads of information about this on various Guzzi sites.
Remember, this issue is not confined to any particular model, as all of the 8V bikes share exactly the same engine.

Aye, I am aware of the flat tappet issue, so should all the dealers flogging the trade ins. They never state the year model of the bikes but are quick to quote the date of registration, which means nothing as lots of the Guzzis can hang around in dealerships for a couple of years. I have seen pre 2012 builds been offloaded in 2015 brand new for £9k. So when you see a 2011 bike advertised as 13 registration with 11k miles and 2 owners for £9k.. I do not think so, especially as you know it is a problem waiting to happen. bit like the bmw`s oilhead drive splines but more catastrophic.
My Griso was rollered immediately after I bought it even though the tappets "appeared fine" That is why it sold quick.
I am thinking a private sale is the best option for a Guzzi 8v.
Thanks for the heads up on the welsh one but sadly it is a pre roller job. that means an £1100 fix if it is unsupported by Piaggio.

Yes of course, boxerscott wrote:They never state the year model of the bikes but are quick to quote the date of registration, which means nothing as lots of the Guzzis can hang around in dealerships for a couple of years..
I didn't say anything about date of registration.
When I said buy a post 2013 bike, I meant as in year of manufacture.
There is a way of working it out by the frame number.
