Thanks for that information nice to know I may have a complete drive failure one day
Not necessarily, but BMW do seem to have a disproportionately high number of final drive issues compared to other shaft driven bikes.pc-uk007 wrote:Thanks for that information nice to know I may have a complete drive failure one day
Hi yes I have seen this guy on youtube perform this operation to the final drive unit as well fitting a reconditioned unit very disappointing have you monitored how much oil you are losing, do you change oil annually and what oil do you use.fontana wrote:Not necessarily, but BMW do seem to have a disproportionately high number of final drive issues compared to other shaft driven bikes.pc-uk007 wrote:Thanks for that information nice to know I may have a complete drive failure one day
Funnily enough, as I write, my R1100RS has developed one.
An oil leak which luckily is the pinion seal at the final drive end.
If it had been the output shaft seal, I don't think it would have been an economic repair, as I don't have the knowhow, tools and space to perform the major surgery required to fix it.
I've only had the bike 4 months, but have covered just over 4,500 miles in that time.pc-uk007 wrote:have you monitored how much oil you are losing, do you change oil annually and what oil do you use.
Just replaced mine - easy job Ime no mechanic!fontana wrote:I've only had the bike 4 months, but have covered just over 4,500 miles in that time.pc-uk007 wrote:have you monitored how much oil you are losing, do you change oil annually and what oil do you use.
When I peeled back the rubber boot between the final drive unit and shaft housing, an alarming amount of oil poured out.
Interestingly, the levels in both gearbox and final drive are about where they should be.
So I've cleaned it all out and am going to monitor over the next few hundred miles.
Damn nuisance.
Final drive seal or gearbox ?bikerboy wrote: Just replaced mine - easy job Ime no mechanic!
Yes I know.dysondiver wrote:gearbox is fairly serious ,,, not tragic , but time consuming.
final drive seals are not too bad
