Sorry for being a bit green, but can someone explain to me what spring preload and adjustable rebound damping are, and how they are set up

Diesel only.....

Dunny,
Preload (Spring tension, based on your weight)
Damping (speed the spring squashes and returns to normal )
Rebound (advanced damping control, speed the spring returns to normal after been squashed).
The preload on the rear shock of the S is the big black (no jokes please) knob. The front is the silver knob on the tank.
The rear preload is is a small screw if I remember.
Take a look at your manual to see what the factory settings are, then set them to that to see what the bike feels like.
Suspension can be a bit in-depth, and it can take some time to set up on complex suspension units. Best advise is to find somebody local who has knowledge in setting suspension up. There again the 'S' suspension is a bit crude, so there is not much to adjust.

A man can fall many times in life but is never a failure until he refuses to get up
Err... Andrew is sort of right.
Preload - Applied to the spring to suit your weight. More preload = more of the initial and softer part of the spring used up. It gets more complicated in that you really need the correct weight spring to suit you and preload is a tool to fine tune and adjust for different loads.
Compression damping - Controls the speed at which the spring compresses.
Rebound damping - Controls the speed at which the spring returns or rebounds.
The S has rebound damping only though I think it is linked to the compression so the more rebound you apply the more compression you get too. Very crude and I could never get exactly what I wanted. Having said that the K1200 S seemed very good and if you're lucky the F will come equally equipped.

Forgive me father for I have sinned... ex S owner moved onto pastures new with four cylinders and a chain... and back to a twin, albeit in a V.
