I have for past 9 months had the R1100S off battery to clean up rear end, as well as clean up some of the wiring, major service elements including new fuel filter, new throttle cables. As part of the works i including a peak into the ECU but put it all back as it was (purely inspection only, nil evasive actions (can't take chip out on this model anyhow it would appear). I did connect a booster plug but after first attempt of starting & witnessing the redline, i switch it back to original configuration.

Tonight i fueled it up for first time in 9 months, re-connected battery etc. Engine is priming fine, engine started on 2nd hit of the starter button; the problem however is it is redlining immediately (i kill it @ 4-6k as it appears to only go one way & that is up).... Nil input on throttle, it just starts to scream towards higher revs. Revving via throttle masks nil if any different. Any idea's what i have done or what needs to be reset to make the thing respect the throttle position?

NOTE: i have not put the lennies back on the airbox so its only got the k&n sitting on top but SURELY this doesn't result in the behaviour i'm seeing?

Did you check that the throttle bodies are both resting on the stops? your previous post with photos suggests one isn't .

Correct Nigel but this would only allude to a small rev increase at idle, not the redlining i was experiencing - i stand to be correct though but then i would logically ask what the rest of the 100% of the throttle is doing!

I'm assuming all you've done is fit new cables and roughly adjusted the free play in which case both tb's will make an audible clack when you close the throttle and they both hit the stops and also when you wind it fully open . If not, disconnect the cables at the tb's to confirm that it is the cable holding the tb open . The brass airscrews control the idle speed and can adjust it by a couple of hundred rpm with the throttles fully closed . If the throttle butterflies are open even a small amount the engine revs with no load will run to the redline like you describe.
All this assumes you haven't adjusted the sealed throttle stop screws / lock nuts.

Your were spot on - thanks for the advice; i managed to get the cable loose & back on to the throttle stop screws (which no i have not altered & from what you say don't).

A question i do have though & this reflects a concern i had when i first got the bike, how much 'blue smoke' should i be concerned about with the boxer motor before i think its something more sinister such as worn rings etc? Admittedly on startup this evening, it reminded me it does tend to blow a bit of a blue haze; second start-up after about 15mins wasn't as noticeable but when i rode it back from Scotland it did concern me slightly when i saw it; from the less than 700miles i've ridden it, minimum oil usage although at that distance i wouldn't expect too much.

Unless the oil consumption is horrendous I wouldn't worry, I've seen some boxers smoke at start up I'm assuming it's valve guides? . Just give it an Italian service* and it'll be fine I used to worry when I bought my bike over 10yrs ago , now with over 100k miles on it oil consumption is minimal and the rattles are worse but performance is better than ever.....

* Italian service = a good thrashing
