And The Longevity of ShaftDrive!!Me-109 wrote:Good write-up.![]()
Just need to be able to weld and to have stores of suitably-sized scaffold tubing (or similar) to make the necessary tools. And maybe buy an electric impact driver.
Not that I have a shaft-drive to worry about! Ah, the simplicity of chains....
Shaft drive to bevel box oil leak

The newer BMW shaft-drives don't appear to have the longevity of the older ones.
Reasons? I suspect that the tripling or quadrupling of horsepower and torque pulses exceed the capabilities.
Chain has its advantages............

I don't want to be the voice of doom here but when my oil seal went on my 1100 it was because the double bearing for the input shaft had died. I removed the bevel box and took it to a local firm of BMW specialists who charged me about £130 to supply & fit new bearing and oil seal (they had to get the old one pressed out in a hydraulic press - they also re-set the backlash which made the transmission sweeter..
There would appear to be a surfeit of prolixity and sesquipedalian content today please do not use a big word when a singularly un-loquacious and diminutive linguistic expression will satisfactorily accomplish the contemporary necessity
Just been to Mike Overy of Overland and Classic to let him look at the final drive on my 1200s which appears to be leaking oil. £400 for a rebuild or £500 if I want the rear drive powder coated again as its a bit bubbly.
He seems to think a rebuild is normal given the 69000 mileage, which makes shaft drive an expensive if convenient option considering the shaft snapped at 60000 at a cost of £545 fitted myself!
Anyone know if any other final drives fit on a 1200S? There are loads of low mileage examples on ebay from other 1200s but no 1200s ones.
