Engine swap

I'm surprised I've not seen any threads here on swapping the 1100S engine for the 1200S.

Why is this?

As the 12 puts out more BHP is it not a swap you would want to do for more power?

I'm a complete mechanical knob knowledge wise, but i like to have a go at stuff armed with U tube tips.

The engine casings/mountings must surely be the same, I'd thought its the easiest swap ever. But obviously it cant be as I would have seen threads on here.
Similar to time travel maybe? Possible but as we've seen no one from the future it cant happen

Should i start saving my pennies looking for a 12S engine?

You really need an HP2s engine for that "seat of the pants" feeling :D

There were very few 1200s sold, so the chances of picking up an engine - are probably fairly slim?

Slap a turbocharger on the 1100 - that should do it.

Al :D

The 1200 and 1100 don't have common mounting points and I don't think you could replace the engine in isolation anyway.

You could change engine, gearbox, swingarm, final drive, paralever, rear suspension, engine management, subframe, etc Or you could buy the lighter, faster, uglier 1200s in the first place.

I'm (for the moment) completely happy with the 11S.

It was just that all the forums I've been on with other bike/cars, have people chasing more bhp though engine swaps. As I said just found it unusual that considering how outwardly similar all the boxer engines seem to be, I hadnt seen that question asked before.  :D :D

its not that easy ,,, mountings are worlds apart , if you ever see both without plastics they are worlds apart. the only thing they messed up with on the 12 was the pillion seat height , other than that , and a slightly tall first gear they are epic.

Agree on that last post.

The 1100S is verging on iconic in BMW land because of how different it was to everything that went before. It was and is well sorted and a good all round bike that can track day and tour. The 1200S probably tried to do much in that it was BMW's response to the 916 but was never going to compete with that head to head. In taking that direction the 1200S was never going to be as good all round as the 1100S, but as a solo rider it is better bike. Lighter, better handling and more powerful. I loved mine and owned both the 1200 and 1100 at the same time - that was until I realised I never rode the 1100 :D . So, I sold it.

well , cant argue with that ,,, since i sold my 11 , some how ive wound up with a 12 ,,, and an r1150r , an expensive way to fix a missing comfy pillion seat ,,,, ah well ,, my r is just a gs with lower seat and alloys ,,, so its a win win really.
