Calling GS owners
Just bought some used Vario boxes for new bike, I know they can be recoded but one of them is unlocked and the other one is locked but the handle wasn`t clicked down so box will open. No keys with boxes but seller said boxes were ready to be coded.
Can the one in the locked position be recoded?

You need the key to get the tumblers flush with the barrel. The retaining tumbler or ring can be pressed flush and the barrel extracted. There is a cheat but I cannot remember. Otherwise you will have to drill the barrel I think which is a gentle operation bordering on marking the panniers. I have only done it twice in 8 years. Get yourself over to UKGSer or maybe Blackal will be along shortly with more detail.

(scratching my head....)
I think you have to have the barrel of the lock - in the "unlocked" position in order to remove it from the case, but might be wrong on that (not at home to check).
Surely the key supplied - unlocks that unit?
If not - I think you will need to have a look on Youtube or a search that takes you to UKGSer or AdvRider for the full SP.
Re-coding is simple, if fiddly. You really only need 3 of the wafers "active" so don't worry if you can't use all 5.

I had a problem with the pannier locks on my BCR and the local dealer managed to open it and sort it but I did have the key - might be worth a call to a dealer - failing that maybe a good locksmith could sort it

The ones I have one is unlocked the other is locked. Had a look on gs and adv site but threads I looked all use a key to get barrel out to recode it. Will spend a bit more time on it over weekend. Been busy trying to get4 bikes and a trailer to fit in my single garage!
Thanks for the replies.

If they're the same logic as 11xx BMW panniers you have to insert the key to line up the wafers and you then insert a pin or whatever in the release hole and out pops the whole cylinder assembly with key attached.
So if you don't have the key you may be stuffed?
If you do have the key, then recoding the lock to a different key is very easy - just watch for tiny springs etc pinging all over the floor...

I have no key, but from what I understand the box that is unlocked will be fine to recode, the other will probably need drilling out. Fair play to the seller he apologised profusely and refunded the cost of a key set so i should be ok as long as I dont F**k up the drilling!!! What could possibly go wrong?

You thought correctly Al, 3 screws and the lock and catches come out in one piece and a sprung plate is compressed to remove the barrel, then its easy to remove the lock wafers. When I pick the bike up tomorrow I can do the same to the top box that is fitted and reset the side boxes to the same configuration, may need to get some new wafers possibly.
Thanks, Al.
