Time for a change

Post by Al »

After just over 10yrs I have decided its time for a change, I have had ops on both knees and elbows recently and I am struggling to do any distance on the 1100 even with raised bars and lowered pegs, so have decided to join the GS tribe, been looking for one locally but not too many around in my budget range at the moment.
I will be giving both the 1100 and my Baghira a bit of a tidy up over the next couple of weeks before advertising them.

If anybody is interested before then pm me for any information.

I know a few on here frequent the ukgser site as well, so any tips for gs buying would be appreciated and hopefully I can get one before Llangollen or I may not get out the spa pool all w/end as my joints will be f****d.

Don't wish to sound like a vulture, but if you were returning the 11S to standard before selling it, I would be interested in the footrest lowering kit.

Hi Al, it is indeed a sad day when we have to sell our favourite toys because we have had to grow up a bit
But happy to hear that you have chosen the GS route, means you are still allowed to play with us :D

I would like to know more about your Baghira, any pics?

Al, that is a bit out of my budget range and an adventure is a bit too bulky I think as I was looking to do the 17" wheel conversion like Ryan.
John, that may be possible, its a wunderlich kit either 15 or 40mm drop, I will let you know.
Steve, its an 03 Black Panther, 17000 ish km, apart from hand guards and an end can it is standard, I will sort some pics this week hopefully. there are library pics on the net to give you an idea of looks.

Hi Al, sorry to hear about that... I bought my 1150GS totally on a whim, half expecting it to be all talk; and it's a bike which just keeps growing on me. Comfy (especially with a Sargeant seat). Wind protection is better than you'd think (MRA screen), and very easy to ride, quite rugged.

If your knees are iffy, take care with the ride height clambering on? They're tall off the ground - I notice it and I'm 6' 2" with the seat on its lowest setting.

I get the impression that the older (cheaper) ones are more reliable than the newer versions, but I may be wrong. Beware buying a second hand bike that's been hammered by heroes.

They're quite wide - my GS is a full 8" wider than my R100RS, so filtering can be entertaining. Panniers aren't that capacious - again, my benchmark R100RS carries more as well as being narrower.

Easy to keep clean, no panels etc to get in the way. Quality of finish variable though; I've repainted all sorts of bits on mine. Mine has had all the usual 1150 foibles, HES failure, some strange electric issues, drive shaft / clutch failure (at 28,000 miles, I ask you!), clutch slave death - although it's still on the same paralever bearing, so I guess I've saved somewhere...

This may be daft, but have you thought about a decent late model R100RT? They're light, narrow, low, easy to work on, low depreciation and will carry the earth... Just a thought...

One thing I'd warn about the older GS (I have an 1150) is that they are heavy. Heavier than the later 1200GSA. Have you considered the 1150R? Same engine and frame but lower and it feels a bit lighter because of that.
