Out of interest, what is the 'rubber' cap in the photo below taken after removal of battery holder from R1100S? Couldn't quickly locate it in the old Hayes manual.



As i'm doing a reasonable overhall, is there anything i should be lookign to replace while i've got more or less all of the top pulled off it? Already done fuel filter, throttle cables.

I also want to clean it up a bit on the inside - anyone recommend any cleaners & can i be quite liberal with it (i.e. with electrical etc). Was thinking a degreaser of some kind.

No idea what it is. Bilthamber does a environment friendly water soluble degreaser, Surfex HD. You only need a small amount. GT85 for a shine and to some extend also degreases.

Could it be the gearbox breather? No 4 in this diagram:

I think you may be right... makes sense.

I use Mucoff under the tank etc - lard on and rinse off. SDoc 100 is heavier duty, thicker and more expensive. I usually clean it all off then apply WD40 or a smidge of ACF50 to keep it protected until next time - particularly in the connections.

Apparently BMW advise against Mucoff on their painted / lacquered surfaces as it attacks them if left too long - not sure if Steve P has any inside feedback? (I use car shampoo as much as possible, Mucoff & SDoc for post winter deep clean etc.)

UKGSer advise (carefully) slitting the electrical trunking at the bottom of each loop in the loom to let water out and avoid rotting the wiring. A mate has his VW Golf in the workshop with that problem - intermittent disconnect to the ECU...

i use turps a lot , its great for general cleaning , white spirit ,, just on a rag , great for wheels , and fantastic for chain lube , no call on the dubs of course. but its often over looked , then its good old acf50, just a dust over lightly , avoiding discs and pads of course.
