Just in case there are those of you that use this road, it is now covered with operational TOD camera's. On the way into London down the Westway tonight where the first 50mph camera existed is where they start and they continue right though the 40mph section at Hangar Lane and then all the way to the elevated leading onto the Marylebone Rd. The ones at the end of the elevated haven't been completed yet but there's always a queue so it hardly matters yet. Also when I traveled to my folks last Saturday evening Westward I found the same thing. All the 50mph camera's are now inactive with the white 'speed' lines burnt off the road and the TOD's now active. Be careful out there.

Ah, thanks for the heads up!
I travel through that stretch of road quite often!

Is it yellow cameras like the ones on roadworks?

Thanks for that Steve, I use the A40 from the North Acton junction then into London on the elevated part. I must say that at 6 in the morning, the speed of traffic on the elevated section (including me) is not 40mph!

Thanks for the heads up.

No. They are quite unobtrusive and high up. The yellow old style cameras are still in place for the time being so if one is not paying attention it would be easy to get caught. A week last Friday however on the way out of town i noticed that they have a constant light shining on to the road where I assume they get the license plate info.

You and me both. I noticed them going up some weeks ago so have been adjusting my speed since then in anticipation of them becoming operational. There were plenty of people flying past me last night who were not aware of the change. Speeding revenue is going to see an increase over the next few weeks I feel.

Cheers for that, I use that patch of road a lot too and on some stretches the average speed of drivers is nowhere near the speed limit. As Jeremy Clarkson said when the limit was 50 and everyone else was flying along at 70, "If you tried to do 50 along here you'd be killed".

Do they read the rear number plate?

Some interesting links:

There is mention of the A40/Westway cameras being similar to the ones already in use on the A13 in East London. The cameras there are front facing.

I was going to ask whether they were rear facing or front facing as we got some average speed cameras here about 5 yeras ago on a nasty, but lovely twisty stretch of road, that i've yet to set of ;)
but they're updating them soon and i have a horrible feeling that they're going to be rear facing specifically to catch bikes
