Gear Position Sensor

A couple of weeks after getting the R12S, and on two consecutive mornings, the gear position sensor didn't know which gear it was in and the bike wouldn't start. The gear position display is blank. It didn't happen again so I put it down to one of those things.

Now two years later, it has happened again; once last week and twice today. If I click up through the gears to 5th or 6th, it seems to get the hang of it and is happy to start. This afternoon it was a bit more reluctant and I had to go up and down the gears about 3 times before the display consistently showed a gear number.

Has anyone changed the sensor and can give any advice, or is it a professional job? It looks like two bolts holding it in place, but they look a pig to get at. I don't know if it will do any good to pull the connector off, clean it and put it back. I'll do that first and see what happens.

Just after my post, I took the connector off and squirted some WD40 in it. Since then (touch wood, cross fingers) the problem hasn't occurred again.
