Salt!

Post by Steve1200S »

Is it me, or is road salt getting nastier?

I'm fed up of washing the bike! Even the day after a wash, the trip to work and back coats it with so much brown crap the hose pipe can't shift it without some kind of bike cleaner.

I've always left the bike to cool, then sprayed down with cold water before putting it away in the garage, which usually gets most/all the sludge off, but this winter it just doesn't seem to want to come off...
I've had to free the front brake calipers off twice since xmas (both days after I've put the bike away without a spray down).

Just had a nice wrestle with the exhaust clamp on the end can too, which was rotted solid. :(

Anyone know what's in it? It's obviously not just rock salt anymore...

Funny you should mention that , I hadn't used my 11S in a couple of weeks although I had cleaned it down and ridden it to dry out everything since I last used it.... went to move it today and the pads were welded to the discs.

I believe they add molasses to it now to make it stick to the road. At the local salt depot there's a distinct treacly smell :)

That would account for the tacky glue ....

Noticed the other day with the car , had the distinct feeling the pads were glued on the disc when I drove out ....

Makes sense.. I really hate the stuff anyway. Even cycled to work today to avoid getting it on my freshly cleaned GT. :)
