Battery charger lead for Hella socket

Post by Motocod »

Hi Folks,

My bike has a Hella socket - can I use this to charge the battery? If so, where can I buy a lead? I have a feeling I've asked this before, in which case I apologise if I have!

I've got an Oxford Products charger, like this one:

Happy to splice something in, if there's a cable I can buy off the shelf...

Any guidance appreciated!

Thanks,

Nik

Hi, sorry to pinch the thread but its on the same subject, hope you don't mind... My bike does not have an accessory socket but I wish to either put one on or use my accumate trickle charger, now I would like an accessory socket that I could trickle charge my battery through and also run satnav etc.

Can someone with the knowledge tell me my best option AND how to do it

Many thanks Marsh
er, mmmmm I'll think of something funny soon.

The Hella socket, as you call it, is the standard size for a cigarette lighter receptable in 24 V systems.
So look for dealers who sell stuff for trucks, buses, haulers etc.

You can buy a very expensive kit off BMW or what I did was make a bracket and fitted one of these, the company in question send them out very quickly

Thank you Steve, that's a virtual pint I owe you there mate!

I assume it has a +ve and -ve terminal inside that I wire to? Do you suppose it would make any odds if I got the leads the wrong way round? I'm guessing the battery charger would be intelligent enough to know, and not blow up?!

I'd personally go with

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DIN-Continent ... 43aad339ff

That's the one I got, I just figured for the extra few pence having the loom pre supplied was better than faffing about making one.

The socket has a small + symbol on the relevant spade connectors at the rear.

However, it's worth double checking as you fit. The centre of the socket is live the sides of the socket are earthed.

As they're smaller than cigarette lighter sockets you will need the correct plug to connect to them.

I've got a socket as per Steve's pic and an inline fuse virtually same as with the optimiser and spade connectors and a spare plug (or 2) to fit it if anyone wants to fabricate their own charging circuit and heat shrink tubing to go with it. Let me know if it's of use to anyone - free to a good home
