2007 R12S do keys contain chips etc?

Post by StreetFlatTwin »

Just a quick one. I had all of my bike documents out and noticed that although I have 2 alarm fobs and 1 plastic key I only have one real metal key for my bike.

So I am wondering if I am able to buy a blank key from a locksmiths or eBay etc and get it cut? Or do they have security chips in them which means although the key will work the bike won't run??

i enquired at dealers and was told that i needed to take my V5 reg doc to them and once they were happy i was the owner they would order it directly from germany using their recorded details. Price was £28 for a complete key

It'll be the same as my 07 K12GT I'd think, so yes they do have a chip in them.

BMW dealers will order you a key. I may be wrong but I was told that you can only have a maximum of 8 keys after that the ECU has to be replaced if the last one's lost :)

So given you already have two, with the plastic wallet key, the next will take you to 3 after that there's only 5 left :)

Martin at bromsgrovecobbler@gmail.com will 'convert' your plastic one into a proper metal key for just £15....you post yours to him, his price includes return postage. Bargain! :) Drop him a line and he'll send you his address.

He originally posted on the Euro K-Club site, which is where I got his details from, no other affiliation to him other than being a satisfied customer.

That's what I thought-they have transponders in them.

£28 for a key?? I suppose is not too bad as its an original BMW one.

Mlieplod £15 is that just for a metal key (but no transponder) so it will fit but won't start the bike??

Thanks guys no point ordering a blank from eBay- I'll leave it and order one when I'm feeling flush!!

Sorry, should have explained better!....he takes the transponder from the plastic key and transfers it into a metal one! So you end up with a fully working spare metal key. :)

Timson's do keys with transponders in but they're a lot more than the £28 quoted by BMW - I think I was quoted that for my Boxercup. Think I'll get a couple of those copy keys from China and see if I can get a spare cut
