We've just been debating the use of 20W50 Halford's 'Classic' oil elsewhere...

Mind you, Wilkinson's will sell you 5lt of 20W50 dino oil for less than a tenner!

But the Halfords comes in a lovely metal can.

I'm running wilkinsons 15/40 diesel oil at the minute it seems like good stuff [well the motor is still in one piece and it has'nt turned to jelly] also it seems to need less topping up than it did after the last oil change [halfords semi synthetic ] it was on offer!
in the garage i have a 5 galon drum of morris 10/40 guess whats going in next

Mr. Spock is my role model so be advised; I possess no (discernible) sense of humour.

It's all VFR (DCT) round here now. STILL missing my 1100s tho.

That's a good deal Dai. I'm useing Silkolene Synthetic Ester 15W50 at the mo. I'm wondering if I could save a few quid by replacing it with this cheap-as-chips stuff. I rarely put my engine under any great strain unless I'm on an M-way and then it's usualy less than 3 figure speeds for an hour or so.

I would think any motor oil that was suitable for a turbo engine would be more than good enough as a turbo spins upwards from 20,000rpm

You don't think there's any problem switching from a synthetic to a mineral?

You should be fine switching that way the problems arise when you do it the other way round, with a mineral oil you get sludge deposits if your late changing the oil when you then switch to a synthetic oil after sludge builds up the synthetic will loosen the sludge causing oilways to block
If changing from mineral to synthetic best to do a parrafin flush first to get the sludge out

:) Cheers mate. That's what I needed to know. I think I'll be filling 'The Old Girl' up with the cheaper option 20W50 come the next oil-change.
