New R1100S Owner. Queensland, Australia.

Post by HerrFlick »

Hi Guys.

My first post here (although I've lurked a few times for tech tips).

I own an R1100S, '03, Mandarin/Titanium (oh alright yellow and grey :). 55,000km.

Purchased in April '12, but have only begun to really use it since October.

History: Earlier this year I had the opportunity to ride a friend's R1200GS to Phillip Island for a WSBK round.

Never ridden a Beemer, ever, so thought OK, should be fun.

Turned into an absolute love/hate thing by the time I reached PI (2500km) and was ready to burn it. Grrrr. (all grief caused by 'factory' issues btw). The 4-day return trip was done continuous bucketing rain and by the time I was home (5500km) I found it had really grown on me; Copenhagen Syndrome and all that.

Anyway since most of my time is spent in twisty mountain roads the R1200 was not for me (love the power delivery), and looking about I found the R1100s.

To the here and now: PO had fitted touring bars, heated grips, and a herd of aux. electrical stuff for his touring needs. Had more cabling than a telephone exchange.

I "unfitted" all this (in the end, with narrowed eyes and foaming mouth) and it began to feel and ride like a sporting bike.

I've begun to sort various issues, some ergonomic, some technical: cranky idle (butterfly shaft wear), surging (fuelling ?), seat height / riding position, aerodynamic stuff plus a few more that get round to asking about.

Today I've been tackling the fitting of GS intake runners in place of the 'S' runners (if you could call them 'runners'), and discovering other little things along the way, which I plan to photograph and post.

Would like to hear from anyone who's done this (+results).

This has probably been a bit overdone for an introduction :( but some future time I'll be looking for suspension and exhaust ideas.

Thanks and Cheers.

Welcome to the forun sir

Intake runners you have me interested! do you mean the gs intake rubber hoses from the air box to the injector bodies?
If so i have a feeling they won't fit [shame as it was something i have looked into]
For an exhaust idea the cheapest option would be keep the stock can's and fit a chinese Y piece from Ebay
with the money you save by not buying can's you can get a pair of good shoc's or at least a rear
next purchase would be a set of rocket sprockets from your own countryman Lennie [Mark Lennon]
If you intend to do a lot of night riding you will need a HID set up for at least the dip beam
Hope this help's Dai
My bike shines when it rains!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi HerrFlick and welcome aboard.

What Dai said bout sums it up. Ive fitted Wilbers rear shock, HID lights, both high and low, Rocket Sprockets and modded exhaust.

Also had my seat reupholstered, a layer of Dacron fitted.

My bike had a set of after market top triple clamps some low bars fitted by PO as well.

Hi Guys.

Thanks for the welcome and the interest.

I'm fitting the longer intake choobs at the moment and will be uploading pics soon. Planning on a test ride later this morning. Balmy 25C. Tough gig but someone ...

What is the most suitable area here to continue this discussion?

Dai - I've just returned from a 100 mile loop around some favourite mountain roads - first time out with the new choobs:

All I can say is WOW !!! What a transformation. Different bike.

I'll go into more detail later when I find where to post pics, but the GS runners can be fitted very easily and you'd never know to look at the bike.

Power delivery: Engine will trickle down smoothly to <2000 rpm, then begins noticeable acceleration passing 2500, and once past 3000 drives strongly to 7000, with a bags of torque from 3500 to 6000. No surging.

On deceleration the engine braking is smooth a la japanese fours, meaning that when rolling into/accelerating out of switchback and hairpin turns the bike feels much more precise, and without the need for shifting at awkward moments.

Whoever would have thunk this could happen with such a cheap and simple change?

Best start ever to 2013.

Whoo bloody hoo .... yeee haaaaaa =D

Cheers
