1999 R1100S.
Pressed the starter on Monday morning. Engine turned over but did not start. Tried several more times. Then the starter stuck in the dis-engaged position. Put the battery on charge. Went to work on the Bantam. when I got home took the starter off and freed it. Put it back. Motor turned over but did not start. Then there was a loud bang! The plugs spark. I can smell petrol on the plugs. It doesn't even fire. Was the loud bang the ignition timing thing?
Was it a mechanical loud bang or an exhaust loud bang? If it was mechanical it could have been lots of things. If it was an exhaust bang I would check for spark and check your Hall Effect Censor (HES).

Hall sensor check put bike on centre stand remove plugs put back into plug caps ignition on put bike into gear turn engine by back wheel if sensor good you will get spark and fuel pump will prime with every turn of the motor
Where are you someone may be close and be able to help
Fill in user C,P, then we will know where you are if you just say in a reply we will forget!
If sensor U,S, it will still prime when you turn on ignition and spark once but that will be it
Hall sensor usually fails after a wet run or after being left to warm up for too long [left ticking over for ten minutes will often cook the wireing]
Not often Hall sensor that fails usually wireing to the sensors
He means on your profile page, just fill in a bit more info in the location bit.
