Changed a rear tyre in recent weeks and still no detectable play in anything , but this time when spinning the rear wheel it felt rough , and using the old screwdriver to the ear trick it sounded like the noise was coming from the front of the bevel box

Bit the bullet today and removed the bevel box , spun the short driveshaft , hmm, that is rough . Luckily during my 9 years of ownership I had acquired a new bevel box ( dealer doing a clear out way back).
Inserted the drive shaft , silky smooth

I hadn't looked at the description on the bevel box label before now.
Ssshh don't tell r550s

At the previous recent oil change bevel box drain plug was ok, not so now

With the bevel box removed I had a look at the para bearings , last replaced approx 3 years and just under 30 k miles ago, no play a little rusty , and one is indexed ..

Noticed then that the swing arm had very slight play , better remove that then, found a post from number8 and others , m6 threaded bar required .
Got the bits I needed , and used the weight from a large slide puller I had.

Heated the adjustable bolt with a hot air gun and couldn't believe it , everything loosened and the slide puller did its job on the other side.
Wait a moment , why won't the swing arm lift off... bugger, you really do have to remove the exhaust down ( or should that be up ) pipe.
Damn , that silencer is developing a crack in the same place as the previous one....
Removed and inspected the bearings

Maybe the ride home on the night of the big flood last October did some of this damage.
Taking a breather now and everything is lined up for fitting tomorrow , wish me luck!
