Centre Stand Spring Removal

Post by Boxerlass »

We are in the process of fitting a Boxer.de designed bellypan. The final part of the fitting seems to involve locating a pre drilled hole in the belly pan, onto the lug that holds the centre stand spring.

I have phoned Darren at Motorworks and he has told us that the easiest way to release the tension in the spring is to loosen the centre stand allen key nuts and push the stand to one side, locate the belly pan then use the weight of the bike to relocate the spring.

Anybody ever done this?
Am I interpreting wht Darren has told me correctly?
Anybody ever fitted a boxer design centre stand belly pan before?

Cheers

I don't know about this particular application, but I always use a big F off cable tie to relocate stand springs, I loop it loosely around the hook at the end and the you can pull the spring into place and cut the cable tie to release it, no more busted knuckles 8).

If it is the boxerdesign.de bellypan that I think it is, I do not think that the bellypan and the centre stand can be fitted at the same time.

Good luck!

Sandbar - The belly pan is specific to the R1100S with centre stand, supplied by Motorworks. It fits around all the underneath tackle OK and we are happy that it is the correct bellypan for the centre stand.

Just been out to have a look at an 'S' with the boxerdesign.de bellypan fitted and there is no way that this particular bellypan will allow a centre stand to be either fitted or used.

In my experience (withou centre stand) they actually fit extremely well and are very easy to fit (that's not bad, is it ? - a testimonial for a competitors product!).

The only small exception is if you have sports suspension with the shorter telelever arm and want to use a paddock stand. In that case you will need to make a small modification to the bellypan because otherwise the telelever arm makes contact with the bellypan when the bike is on the paddock stand.

Pauline,
re your original q. I think Darren is right (he usually is!).

A couple of time I've had to replace the pivot bolts (fell out  ) and it was easiest to take the spring off last and put back it on first.
Only thing was I removed the entire pivot unit (bolt and bobbin) on both sides to do this - rather than just loosened them.

Harry.

Thanks Harry. We may even take the centre stand off and leave it off - find it pretty difficult to get the bike up on the centre stand anyway!
I think that Darren DID actually tell us to take the stand off rather than just loosen the bolts - I just reported it incorrectly in my origonal posting.

Sorry about the confusion. I recalled a previous thread where I thought you had said that you were going for a Boxer Cup bellypan. My mistake!!

That is an interesting shape. It is a lot shorter. Is there access to the oil filter, or do you have to take the centre stand off everytime you wish to change the filter?

Erm - good question! To which I dont have an answer. BMW will most likely be doing that for us for the forseeable future anyway. Also, we may leave the centre stand off (save a bit of weight, get another BHP out of her!!).

You mention being a competitor for the Boxerdesign pan - what do you do if you dont mind me asking?

Hi Pauline,

Sandbar Composites Ltd are the UK agents and distributors for the Ilmberger range of carbon fibre parts, HPE exhausts and SICOM ceramic-composite brake technology.

We do not (at the moment) do a bellypan, but are working on one that is very similar (ahem!!!) to the BCR one, but in carbon fibre - of course! We have the manufacture organised, the quality is the best available, but it is the price that is the issue at the moment. It may be that the quality is too high for the application!

My only connection with Motorworks is that of a very satisfied customer (amongst other things a Boxer Cup Bellypan) and also as a supplier.

Cheers

Well I'd be happy with a GF one if it's a true BMW Boxercup replica, especially as it would be painted. All this CF stuff is a bit excessive. Great for pose value, but not much use on a road bike that already weighs two an a half tons.
