I definitely wouldn't say that - it's still a cracking photo though, I'd be chuffed to bits if I'd taken it. :)

Sorry Andy - meant to add, was looking at your Flickr page and admiring your gorgeous GSD pup. Is he/she a working dog?

Richard,

The GSD was called Goose and he was a police puppy that we looked after until he went into training. So, we had him from last August (8 weeks) until April just gone. He was a lovely dog and a real character. The pics were from last September. The idea is that the puppies get a normal upbringing and are well socialised before training, so being in a house with kids, cats, visitors carpet, stairs etc.

We got loads of exercise and had a lot of fun with him. We will probably have another this autumn.

Although I knew a little about dogs prior the experience taught me a lot about breeding. The police dogs are high drive so always looking to push the boundaries, i.e. 'who is top dog around here' and so the pups need a firm hand. In return they are rewarding to raise as they pick things up quickly and are well disciplined. Bit of a wrench when they go but you can see they are ready to be working dogs and being a pet would actually be a waste of the breeding and boring for the dog with the amount of energy they have. Chasing criminals is what they are born to do.

Andy - he certainly looks sharp as a tack. Wonderful to spend time with him, and I'm in no doubt he's had a great start to life. :)

It was me making the connection between him and the photo of the guys on parade at Hendon which is why I wondered if Goose was going into the 'Firm' as it were. I took the girls along to the RAF Police Dog Trials at RAFC Cranwell last weekend - was a great day, and the dogs (as you'd expect) were brilliant. A lot of Malinois being used now.

Yes,

my local force use a combination and seem pleased with them all for the variety they bring to the jobs they need to do.

As you may know the police look for very different dogs to the forces - for me they are all pretty intelligent and worth their weight in gold.

I'll be posting up a few Prague photos soon - seems to have been a travel month for me this July !
