i tried 34/40 today and it's possible it might be in the mind but it felt squirmy and i didn't like it. perhaps its because i've always ridden with high pressures but i think i'll keep them at 36/42

It's a very good point Ian - I think the problem lies with the fact that for many people their bikes are seen as an accessory, a consumer item which ranks along with their car/hifi which just gets filled with fuel/plugged in etc and left to its own devices. Of course one could argue that many modern bikes are feindishly complicated but could be answered by stating that they're now much more reliable/resilient and will work 'whatever'.iandunn1100ss wrote: we always end up talking about all the guys we know who know nothing about the bikes they ride and even routine checks your too much to ask. I get asked to job silly jobs by these people ie chain adjustment clutch cable play and the like ,years ago people would strip and rebuild their bikes and think nothing of it. The modern leisure motorcyclist has taken over and a matching lid and leathers are more important than having a bike you know you can rag the ass off and nothing will fall off because you know you have spent TIME looking after it.
