Cool 8)

Landed at the old Hong Kong airport a few times - never failed to make me go 'blimey' every time we did. Especially so when in 1986 the flaps on the B-Cal DC10 we flew in on failed. Here's a vid of a Malaysian 747 dash 400 landing at Kai Tak...

You flew on a DC10?? Now THAT is brave. It is not something I would do.

It was the one and only time I'm glad (and relieved!) to point out. Talking to those in the know, I've since realised why they've not got the best rep. We later found out via the grapevine (we did a gig at Kai Tak later in the week for the RAF coningent there so got to hear about it) that the pilot of said DC10 had been ordered to take 4 weeks' sick leave due to the stress of the incident. Apparently we were supposed to land at approx 140 knots (don't know the actual figure) but we were doing in excess of 200 or some such. It seem to brake quite hard put it that way :D

The father of a good friend of mine was an aeronautics engineer before he retired and told me one or 2 rather hairy stories about DC10's.

Working on it. These are available for your BCR (and other bikes) right now

Sicom ceramic brakes on test:

Not as far OT as you might think. They are of considerable interest to the aviation business - both military and civil - because of their speed of recovery after such use. Miles better than carbon, because the wear is negligible and they work when cold and in the wet!!

If it needs a tow I think it's safe to say it's not airworthy!

Extraordinarily interesting thread, chaps. Being new here (although far from new!!) I realise my comment is a little late. The quality encourages me to furtle further in the archives for similar golddust. :)

good, but don't furtle for too long at a go. don't want you getting Carpal Furtle Syndrome
You really need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.
