It is sort of a relief to find that this happens to people other than me. My bike is limited to track use and so it gets nothing but a caning. The transmission has about 47,000 miles.

During the last two race days, in fifth gear it would occasionally display what is described at the top of this thread, only in fifth but not every time or even every lap. It was never very bad, only one or two skips. By the end of the second race day the problem seemed to have disappeared.

The bike will be coming apart at the end of the season to check the clutch so it looks like a good opportunity to check the gear clusters as well.
If enough is enough and more is better than too much should be just about right.
