My Brother has a "rat bike" ( I know, sad isn't it ) he had a similar problem with the horn not working, so he just attached one of those old bulb type honky horn things, you know, where you squeeze the rubber bulb and and it goes HONK!, crazy but it got him passed the mot! I know it's a bodge, but if the lack of mot keeps you off the road, it may work as temporary solution? as you only have to have some form of audible warning for the test.

Thanks Steve. Had to laugh at that one and you're probably right. I can but one of those horn things from Halfords or somewhere and get the thing through the MOT. I'm away to check with the guy who does my MOT if this would be ok. Thanks for the advice.

Any idea as to what this costs or the part nos ? What should I be looking for when I have access to the necessary wires ie bad connection, corrosion, broken wire ?

Scotty - you don't have to remove any bolts to get the bottom of the box off - just make sure all the little tabs are free - I think there are 3/4 each side - then you can slide it out without disturbing the wiring.

The little tool - I don't know where to get one to be honest - If motorworks don't know then I'm not sure - I know some people on here have mentioned them.

If the wire is broken, and it comes from the big loom bundle entering the other end of the relay box then you can forget trying to find the fault in all that stuff - at least I did - and just replace it with a simple circuit from the battery.

I'm having a NIGHTMARE with a diagram on the web - email me your private email to jasonmardell@tiscali.co.uk and I'll send it on.

Hi Folks

Still can't locate this problem. I checked the electrical connectors on the horn over the weekend as Darren at Motorworks mentioned this could be the fault. This was'nt the problem as no current whatsoever is getting down to the horn. Jason's fault remedy seems the most likely now and he mentions that there is a small electrical tool which exists to remove individual wires from connectors. If anyone has one of these can you let me know where I can locate one.

Thanks
Scott

Well this one is eventually sorted and the fault was a broken live wire running from the relay to the fuse box on the left side of the bike. A massive thanks to Jason for providing expertise over the telephone over the last two day's whilst I dashed in and out of the garage testing each circuit in turn. We managed to track the sucker down though and a couple of connectors and a new piece of wire is all that is needed. It was great to hear that horn blare after all the problems locating the fault. I just sat in the garage bleeping it for a couple of minutes !

I felt so inspired last night that I went ahead and got the old allen bolts out of the y-piece in the exhaust. They were all bad and one was rusty as hell with rust eating right into the structure of the bolt itself. It's good they are out as if they were left for a year or so they would probably have sheared off. I'm off up town tonight to get the two connectors and some copper slip for the new stainless steel bolts and then I've got the MOT booked for Saturday morning. If all goes well I might take the bike for a blast to Ullapool on the West Coast.
