In a way - I think you are correct (although that band may be a little narrower than my estimate).
I've always maintained that on "real" British A-roads with great twisties, and a self-imposed speed limit of around 85-90mph (for license and life-preservation) - then the R1100s is a hard bike to beat.
If you are looking for a bike that sits more comfortably at the upper end of that band - the R1200s fits the bill.
But - if you convince yourself that you NEED a bike that comfortably goes beyond 120 for more than brief moments - then yes............. you will have convinced yourself of the need of a superbike.
Just my thoughts from having put a few miles on them.

I wouldn't be without mine and I've been a staunch Japanese bike rider for more than 20yrs. Getting somewhere fast isn't always about going fast. My other bike has 3-4 times the power and I can't get places as quick as I can on my BMW, unless we're talking dual carriageways/motorways.
Well that's all fine and dandy guys. Takes all sorts and all that.
I don't NEED a supersports. Toured on the BMW just fine this year. Kept in front of a cbr 600rr and KTM RC8.
I however do not like 75HP and 230KG when pushing on and trying to make overtakes above 90MPH.
I have just bought a CBR600F3 and it is a far superior bike for my use. (IE thrashing through Europe and the odd autumn/wet trackday.
