couple of things here - the lorry driver should have taken the space on the road he was on and not the one he was entering plus he has a steering rear axle for tight spaces although it isn't completely clear. Mind you, he won't get many points for it, after all, it was only a Ducati

Interesting what you say as another report on the same article had an expert saying that the lorry manoeuvre was text book! Can't find it now but I'm sure it was the BBC. If I find it I'll post it.

The rider was looking for somewhere to park and had stopped expecting the lorry to slow or stop but I guess he misjudged the distance the lorry needed. I fear I would have done the same....

There is always an element of "it's going to be okay - he's going to see me........ let's not panic"

And - what can be in the rider's subconcious is: "I'm stationary, best to abandon the bike and place the blame firmly at the driver's "bumper" - than to chance a fast manoevre which dumps the bike - to be met with the driver claiming that he had seen him and was stopping, "so - I don't see how I am to blame for you dropping your bike"

(like two cars heading towards each other on a narrow lane with the other driver too far out - leaving you with the choice of clipping him, or clipping the wall..............

Clip the wall - the other driver, drives on oblivious or uncaring.

Best to clip the other car.

Dave, it would be interesting to read that (for me anyway but I'm sad). I don't think it's text book - I was always taught to take the space out of the road you're on cos you don't know what's around the corner(!!) and at least then you should be on your own side of the road - it isn't always possible and on the driver's side the blind spot(s) on modern trucks are horrendous. The road he was leaving appears busy so it may not have been possible to take space from it. I guess we can all make judgements but really we're not getting the full picture.

Hear what you say about blind spots, we had some small vans(Vauxhall) a few years back and the huge mirrors plus door pillars meant you couldn't see a thing. To the extent that when you stopped at a pedestrian crossings' white line, you couldn't see if anyone else was standing there!

Just to be clear, I'm not really blaming anyone, I really think it was a WTF moment, both busy doing what they had to do.

Interesting read Dave. I love it that the London Cycling Campaign want lorries banned from the city - I just want them banned then I might get a better job!! It still smacks of NIMBYism. Everyone wants the stuff on the back of the truck but they don't want the truck. Unfortunately, logistics is a 24/7 business, there is a shortage of about 90 000 drivers, no one wanting to come into the industry and who can blame them for under £10/hour, poor working conditions, even worse facilities for long distance drivers away from home all week, guilty until proven innocent whenever there is an incident - I could go on - rant over bit off track but blame Topcat for postring that link
