I'm fortunate - there's a local breakers just behind my house - I take loose wheels in, he changes tyres and balances them, I get rid of tyres to local tip and re fit the wheels myself. I feel bad that I don't get the tyres from him but when I put new tyres on the VFR, I got a quote and he was almost £70 dearer. I can't afford to be that loyal.
On the subject of recalls, do BMW use DSA (or whatever acronym we've paid for) to contact owners?

Had the rear hub done today. The new part does look more robust (for what it's worth). Had the fuel flange recall and a calibration update done at the same time so my bike is good to go for the summer now.

Slightly off topic but related to tyres - I had Demon Tweeks fit the new tyres (bought elsewhere) to my BCR wheels. They did an excellent job for £24. They checked the wheels with me beforehand, looked for any damage (we found one chip and so photographed both wheels). They changed the tyres and balanced the wheels. They did slightly over inflate them but in fairness did tell me that they did not know the correct pressures and so I should check them before I rode the bike. Also, they give a warning to ride carefully for the first 100 miles so to be sure to take the gloss off the tyres.

Let's hope BMW reimburse him for the part although I dought it, they most certainly won't pay for his time, no word as yet about my machine. Must take the wheel of and check this weekend.

piece was written in 2010 Phil, it's been around a while.
I checked mine today, looks to be Ok, the problem I have is that I bought the bike in a private sale here in Italy and won't recieve the recall notice as the system here is a bit, well, shall we say 'clunky'..
I'll contact BMW Italia and see where we're at, my local BMW dealer closed in Reggio Emilia, which means I have to go to Parma, or over the mountain to Aulla..

Mine was cracked and they changed FOC without the recall notice. If you inspect it and it's not cracked then there is no rush to change.

As is confirmed, the recall is for the hollow shaft type final drives like on the R1200's. The 11xx should be just fine.
Not wanting to hijack the thread but do any of the 1100 owners have difficulty in taking the rear wheel off the flange. Mine seems to keep a bit of water there so now I apply so grease to it to keep the water out between the mating surfaces.

Mine is totally dry, usually a little dusty when I release it, never had a problem of it sticking albeit last time was two years ago.
Hope you are happy with your solution.

best i go and investigate , both the recall , and for cracks , although i didnt notice anything when i rebuilt the caliper this morning ,,, still better check.
