tanneman wrote:The life of an helmet mostly depends on the environment it is kept in. If you have cleaned yours after every ride, stored it in a cool dark place away from moisture then the life is extended. Sunlight, sweat, acid from bug intestines etc reduces the strength of the shell, degrades the liner and the shock absorbent material inevitably compacts. 30000 miles in 7 years is about time I would say. Like Al I have a few helmets in rotation that is stored as mentioned above. I don't expect to buy any soon. The boots though is a different story.

Bell does a custom fit where you get measured and fitted out. Choose carbon for slick racer lightweight look. The service starts at about a £1000 including helmet.
That's exactly how I look after my helmet. I think the general consensus is to go for a new one. It feels like the right time and the Viper will be a perfect spare as my old Quantum has been up until now.

Thanks for your input gents, I am feeling a new Quantum ST shall be on my bonce for the summer.

BTW £1000 for a helmet even with fitting really is extortionate. Especially for a Bell.

Cheers
Steve

OK. New Quantum ST in white with a new dark visor ordered as my one won't fit the new shape. Looks like I got the last white one in the UK too.

I seem to recall replace after 5 yrs use or 7 yrs from date of manufacturing. Irrelevant now as you've bought a new lid!!

Purchased a new Shark Race-R Pro Carbon white helmet, replacing my Shark RSR2 Carbon. Best I've ever had for low noise, wind buffeting, and ventilation, and good safety rating.
