I had always wanted a Kwak z1 after parking my moped next to one and being completely blown away by the look of it, even though it was starting to get dated even then. (approx 1988)
I bought a z900 about 10 years ago. Fantastic looking, but shocking to ride by modern standards. Its hard to think these were once cutting edge.
Not very quick, handled OK as long as you planned well and did not ask too much of it. Heavy, thirsty and dreadful brakes. It did improve my riding though, you really had to plan well if you were going to hustle.
I would only buy a classic now as a 3rd or 4th bike, something for fettling more than riding.
This R100s looks interesting. Definitely scope for fettling and improvement, but it looks pretty good from the pics.
A quick google suggests that the Lufthansa tag is false, these were actually a limited run of 'Exclusive Sport' models in colours lifted from a racing bike. Don't know for sure, but it seems this could be an interesting model one way or another.
I'd always find a place for another Z1-R in my garage even if only to look at
My R80RS only comes out occasionally, in fact at 26,000 miles it's now my lowest mileage vehicle, the front suspension is soft and a bit underdamped, the rear's not too bad (being a later mono model) the single disk brake is poor at best, seeing as the R100's of the same year had double disk set ups I find it amazing how they could justify the single disk as being fair stopping from 70 on the R80 or the R100 is still the same 70 mph but with half the brake. Mind you Yamaha did the same with the LC's, I had a 250 that was awful brake wise compared to my 350, so off to the breakers for the relevant bits and the 250's brakes were transformed. I must do the same for the R80 sometime

My z900 was a US import with single disc. The European model had double disc but I never got the parts needed to convert.
American riders must be easier to bring to a halt the European ones. I wonder if they were worried about the higher speed limits in Europe at the time meaning we were given an extra anchor?

2400 is towards the top end. I guess it depends how much you want it and what extra you can get from Motorworks buying outside of ebay, such as warranty etc.
Judging by the orange reflectors on the forks I wonder if it is a US import?

I thought that (after doing some research), but didn't the US versions have the plastic airbox? Either way, I like this version with the ally airbox more.
It's had the engine work done and a full service, and has a 1 month warranty (will have to ride the crap out of it for a month
), so I was thinking 2.2 would be ok if they drop it off for me aswell.... Think with the link you've just shown me 2k is closer to the mark...

I had a red R 100S back in the day, fine bike that I really liked, chopped it in for an R 100 RS which I toured Europe on a few times.

The money sounds stiff but then everything classic seems to have gone berserk, so in terms of right here and now it's consistent as far as I can see. If it proves to be a well sorted, good riding example then it has to worth it? The cafe racer boom maybe has seen an increase in desirability of the old boxers.
I bought mine private for £600 3 years ago with 90k on it and recent final drive/shaft work. But that's more a sign of how much things have gone through the roof. Mine was tatty anyway. It has gone past 100k now and has been reliable except for a self inflicted issue relating to the battery.
I expect, jumping off the GT the very first impression will be how low the gearing is. I jump off an FZRthou and that's what the Beemer feels like. A moped! And I have lowered gearing on the FZR as well.

All true. when I had the same itch a year or so ago there where loads about, but hardly any now. like you say, they're all bobbers, café racers and scramblers now. I can see why, its a very good looking engine!

Similar is happening with the original K100's they, IMHO, are the best engine ever made (I had 5 K100RS's from 84 onwards and only had one component ever fail (a throttle position sensor) which given how much hassle I've had from the GT is an amazing record

Couldn't wait! had the morning off work and went for a look at the S.
Overall, it's in excellent mechanical condition. everything works (I'm not sure those brakes will ever class as 'working' though!
) and evrything is nice and tidy.
It has some paint missing, but no rust and the engine casing just needs a good polish.
Suspension isn't as soft as I thought it would be, brakes as are as bad as I thought they would be, and it's got more go than I thought it would have.
It's now sat in my garage!
Going to tax it tomorrow and ride the hell out of it all weekend.
It did cost me 2.4 in the end, but I got some goodies thown in and free delivery back to my house, so I'm happy.
I'v had to come to work this aft (boooo!), but I'll post up some photos tomorrow.
