It's on 27000 miles now, I calculated that 10% of it's mileage has been taking it back and to for warranty work.

BMW GB once gave me a free years extended warranty and two hundred pounds credit at my dealership by way of compensation.

I am so glad Ive had the extended warranty as I roughly estimate there's about £7000 worth of parts and labour gone into it. Like triggers broom it's almost new now :)

"Mr Harris, can you give us a call about your bike we are servicing at the moment please?" always dread that call, look for a big bill credit card.

"It's all done and that will be £142 please and we can drop it back at your house for you too?"

Well blow me down tha'ts a nice surprise and only another month before I can ride again.

Today we seem to accept these problems and i don't know why a few years ago Steve would have inserted it into his dealers ass

Steve can you imagine what would have happened if you had sold a Kawasaki that had a list of faults like this the turbo's were bad but bloody hell

I put 80,000 +miles on my old BSA with only routine maintenance ok i put new shells in and bushes at about 50,000 when the sludge trap blocked the shells were showing slight coppering and scoring no need for a crank grind though

I'll say it again if I was doing high milage i would look for a R80 or a R100 as I feel that these are the best bikes BMW have ever made

Perhaps I should use my R80RS more and get rid of the K :)

I actually went into the shed last night and fired the R80 up, it's been a few months since I did so last. It has a trickle charger on it and fair play full choke, first hit of the button off the old girl went and just sat there idling away, which given it was built in 1985 and registered in 87 is not bad :)

The F650 is left outside most of the time, and is used in all weathers including deep snow, and just keeps on working, OK I recently had to put a voltage regulator on it, but its switches etc all continue to function even though it's a 1998 machine.

The K .... I love it, it's stupendously fast and it's never failed to get me somewhere, it's just components have failed constantly, the fuel strip is now the only part that's not been replaced (from the Big Book of K failures) .... now to be honest my argument with the fuel strips is BMW have had problems across the range with them, RT's GS's etc. to the point that they binned them and went back to floats, I know the K13GT has a float not a strip. So my reasoning is if mine fails then I feel BMW should replace the fuel tank with a K13 version in order that I can have a float as by the fact they've given up on the technology they've proven it not fit for purpose as defined in the Sales of Goods Act. ... am I wrong?

I can't help but think the whole bike is not fit for purpose

Now i know you love the bike but if it was me it would be gone

Steve,

I may well have asked you this before apologies if I have but the old brain cell is fading fast as advancing years progress

What is the monthly/annual premium that you dosh out for the warranty service.

I've just had a quote from BMW Motorrad for the K12S for £30.00 p.m. to include the warranty and emergency cover.

Does that sound acceptable?

Cheers

Bob

Yes that's what mine is, and money well spent :)

Have you had the cam chain guide recall done? If not hassle your dealers as it can wreck your engine for the sake of a £5 part

Thanks Steve reckon I'll go for it. Have also heard good reports about the emergency service offered.

Cam chain is being done f.o.c. at the next service when I take it to Williams week after next. No prompting needed Janet knew it had to be done, lot of respect for that lady!

Janet, and Levi, are brill and very helpful. Things have improved immensely since the new service manager, Jim has taken over. He's also a helpful guy.

The warranty is also transferrable and offers a great selling point if you sell the bike. I know while I would have a K I would not have one without the warranty.

When mine was done it wasn't a recall, I sent a massively strong letter to BMW and they did the job, refunded me 12 months warranty and put a couple of hundred quid behind the counter at Williams for me. Janet was stunned at it all, reckoned my letter writing skills must have been exemplary :)

The joys of "modern" electronics Steve, Must admit that's the thing that puts me right off lots of new bikes.

Peter.
