Well I'm running a 2001 1150GS (non ABS) alongside the 2002 1150RS (w/ ABS) since my Worried of Warwickshire angst back in Feb / March.

Tbh I think the 1150RS is the better workhorse - more comfortable, carries just as much, much better protection and the better handling bike in foul weather (like, whatever's happening, it simply shrugs it off). The GS is more 'fun' and has the advantage of being common as muck so loads of spares, bits, and lots of advice around. I do want to fit a set of 80/20 tyres for the depths of winter though - the contradiction being that I could end up with a bike that's better in snow etc, but you freeze to death twice as fast....

I'm unwilling to go beyond 1150s - just too much to go wrong and increasing reliability problems, although maybe that's just my perception.

As I'm on, I see that Nippy Normans is stocking a 12GS retro kit by the Wunderlich crew - £3,400 to revert your bike to the 1980s (sadly without 1980s reliability?). I know their slogan 'complete your BMW' implies you've bought work in progress, but this must surely be taking GSing to the logical extreme? Otoh, maybe it's a sign the economy is at last starting to turn up?

Well the old RT has been fixed again! Always glad to get it back, but fek me its heavy after the tiny 650! Just turning the front from the steering lock to straight while stood still takes a good shove on the bars!

Neither me or the dealer are still not 100% its fixed, but it runs much sweeter now - the left hand intake manifold had a hole it, so very rich and possibly occasionally wet (creating the stall)...

I'm not sure that would stall the engine, or prevent it starting without turning the ignition off for a few mins, time will tell....

But yea, id imagine the 1200 GS has a bit more weather protection than 650 they lent me, but it was really poo. My mostly white (sad i know) boots i got in May have stayed white all year, but two days on the GS have seen them brown!

I'm in the same boat with the 1200s, they are cheep and nasty compaired to the older bikes, but still ahead of alot of the competition.

Are you sure about that? look at the spec and price of a Yam super ten, Spec and weight of Ducati Multistrada, Price, spec and nimbleness of a KTM smt 990? The Gs has spawned a lot of variables that may be better suited to us short arsed weak limbed mortals :lol:

Next years KTM 1190 Adventure in Ride this week. 148 bhp, transformed styling and weighs less ready to ride than the new GS does dry. If chain drive's not an issue, it's got to be worth a look.

Chain Drive is a bit of a pain for touring.................

Until your pal's GS gets trailered home with a knackered final drive unit..

As long as you have room for a scottoiler - it'd be good.

Super 10 has a better swing-arm than the BMW I think.

A hole in the intake manifold ????

So how did that happen then....was it a split in the plastic air tube or a physical hole in the throttle body or manifold stub. ???

Either way, never heard of any of 'em happening before and the extra air bleeding in would cause the bike to run lean, not rich.

It would be unlikely to cause a sudden cut out of the engine but would cause rough running and surging.

What condition are the coil packs in ??? that would be my first port of call.

Failure usually manifests itself by intermittent cutting out especially when hot. As soon as the engine cools down a bit the symptom goes away (until they pack up for good)

Sorry, my bad, it was running lean.

He said it had gone porus and split, it's the bit after the throttle body right against the cylinder head.

I agree, but I'm going to go along with it for now. If it cuts out again I'm straight to the manager for refund.

Intermittent cutouts seem to point to coils, HES or the motronic unit (if its loss of spark) or the fuel regulater or pump if its loss of fuel. Prob some others too.... But yea, running lean wouldn't be a likely cause.

We'll see!

If the motronic or fuel pump was bad it would throw a code.
I would take it out for a real time data logging run on the GS911, but then I have that luxury :oops:
