...........and dont forget the master cylinder. Although it's inverted, the rubber belows can hold moisture + crud, so it can sieze. The cylinder barrel is alloy and gets that nice white finish on it when damp, which stops the internals from moving in and out easily. A second hand one I got recently was thus, and the operating pin/arm which pokes through the belows was thick with rust. Silicone grease once it's all clean should sort it! I packed it full with the stuff.

And lube all the linkage joints!

My brother-in-law recently bought an '02 F650GS with 6K on the clock and a similar thing happened to him. Another motorcyclist flagged him down as there were flames pouring out of his back brake. He would have turned the old fire hose on it but it was buried under too many layers so instead he destroyed his gloves beating out the flames!

The BM dealer in Cardiff has been very good in picking up the bike, ordering new bits and replacing his gloves. I'm not sure what caused the problem but I'll fill you in when I find out.
