Best card to have is a Nationwide debit card, there are no costs for getting money out of a cash machine here in France.

2nd'ed for the NationWide card. I've banked with them for years, the card also works in the petrol pumps in your supermarkets and quite a few other outlets (well all I've tried so far) over there :)

You are correct that most of our supermarket petrol pumps now take UK cards, but with anything other than Nationwide you will pay £1 or £2 transaction charge. That can be quite a lot if you are paying a £3 motorway toll, or 10% on £20 worth of fuel.
I sometimes find that my Nationwide card will work where my French Credit Agriocole card won't.

Post office credit card also, works for me in france, germany and spain, and again, no charge for foreign use. you will also get 3 months interest free credit, so it's a good way to finance your trip.
