Headlight failure again!

Postby Parky » Thu Apr 24, 2008 7:49 pm

Hi,
I have put about 6000 miles on my r1100s and have got through 4 headlight dipped beam bulbs in that time. Can anyone tell me what I need to be looking at to cure this or is it just that boxer vibes that cause it to blow.It blew yesterday at the Mot station but was o.k. when I left the house.(new bulb wouldn't fit neither).
I tried a search but couldn't find anything.

Parky..

Firstly I'd check the charging voltage across the battery (not overly easy on the S as it's under the tank) to make sure your reg/rec isn't going dicky. Sometimes the first symptoms of reg/rec failure is blowing bulbs...at least it is with a VFR.

Secondly, look to see if anything solid/vibe prone is touching the lamp housing as this might cause early bulb failure.

Mine popped again recently the same day it passed the MOT. Had 2 or 3 bulbs in 5 years...

Common fault for headlights going is a bad earth. So check the wiring and connectors and clean if necessary.

Make sure your not touching the bulb glass with your fingers whilst fitting?

It's mounted (car style) on the back of the alternator.

You're not putting in higher wattage bulbs are you to compensate for the shocking candlepower of the OE? I find those blow every 5 minutes on the S.

Standard bulbs my friend. I will take it to bits after the weekend as it is needed.
