you could see it as an automatic oil change system over 4-5000 miles.

On PP there was a report that a lot of the oil usage on some bikes was caused by the engine vent being in the airbox. Under certain conditions, there would be so much under pressure in the airbox, oil would get sucked out of the engine. Disconnecting the vent reduced oil usage close to zero.

During winter service, my airbox contained about a cup of oil, with trails of oil going into the intakes. Drained and cleaned all of that and disconnected the engine vent from the airbox. Installed a cheap engine vent collector/filter from a Honda VFR on the hose instead. I guess after my trip in 2 weeks, I will know how much BS was in this story. Or not.

No need to use a litre every 1000 miles.

If you fill it to the top of the sight glass, it will use about a litre in 1K, which will take it half way down the site glass. So you fill it up again and same thing happens.

However if you only fill it to a level just above the half way point on the sight glass then oil usage will be negligible.

I've found that too.

Although it's a bit of a bugger trying to balance the bike with one hand and then squatting down to see the sight glass - I'm sure it will en in tears one day...

(before you ask - the paddock stand lifts the rear and would give a false reading - and I tend to check the oil when I fill up with petrol...)

Take one swivel mirror (shaving mirror or similar), place it on the floor at 90 degrees to the sight glass, angle it up a bit. Sit on the bike with it upright and look at the mirror

I think we should go back to the winker thread....

I, like Throttlemeister, think the BMW system is very intuitive..... but ergonomically misplaced.... I solved that by having the self canceling option on my Acumen alarm ( about 12 blips).

Now that was a good thread.... ALARMS
