I tried to tax my bike online recently but couldn't due to it being shown as uninsured. Had a chat with the guy in the post office and he was aware of there being delays of up to a month for new bikes going on the database.

Funnily enough I had it MOT'ed less that 24hrs previous and that information was correct.

Paul - when I had my bike accident the attending Traffic Police insurance checked my SV at the scene and that came back as no record held, no insuranc. I tried to convince the nice traffic man that it was insured and as a result he gave me a producer  and the bike got recovered to the repairers. When I got home from hosp I checked all my documents and all was in order. I took my docs to the Police station and when they were checked the guy said that they get alot of bikers in with eBike certificates. I did a bit of digging around and it turns out that eBike are registered as an off-shore company and so not all the details were registered on the UK database. Its now 2 years on and the situation is improving but according to one of my contacts this is still abit of a problem particularly with eBike. Just thought I'd pass on my experiences - it can happen to anyone you know!!!!

I just checked too; my 1100s isn't on there either :? ... I neither have the time or the inclination to be chasing this with the insurance company or the database keepers, as far as I'm concerned it's insured, this years premium is paid & I have the certificate on file.

yes but, it's you who is inconvenienced if you are pulled over, and unless you carry your certificate and policy doc with you, you run the risk of having your bike impounded, the release of it will cost you £££ regardless of your innocence.

Steve

Hmm, maybe I should check then (grumbles)...

Just checked insurance cert, all present and correct, policy is with Equity Red Star through Carole Nash. Policy used to be a multibike up until last year, so maybe that's where the problem stems from. I'll give then a call & check it out tomorrow.

Cheers,
Nero

The GSXR is on there, the GS isn't. And they're on the same policy.

Hi all
As long as you have a certificate of insurance then you are complying with the law as that is all that is required.I dont remember anyone telling me you HAD to be on the data base for them to believe you have insurance. The good old producer covers any area where your details dont happen to be on the database for whatever reason.Legally they shouldnt have a leg to stand on if they did want to take your vehicle. They have to prove you dont have insurance by ALL means before they can take or scrap a vehicle.By all means refers to database and certificates of insurance.Any good copper should be able to sniff out people who are telling or aint telling the truth regarding details of insurance, licenses etc.Maybe worth carrying around photo copies of insurance and license to avoid hassle.Too much trust is put into computerisation of information.Case of "computer said no!".Must be true then!Technology can help, but it aint trustworthy.

Well said, Gus. The database is a guide, not a bible. It is not infallible. If they seize your vehicle because it's not on the database, get your solicitor involved forthwith.

Just checked mine and it's not on the database :?

Strange that as I was pulled by the plod in Llangollen last Sept and everything was in order. I assume that as my insurance has been renewed since then (again with Carol Nash but a different insurance provider) that the data base hasn't been updated.

Be interesting to know what percentage of bikes are not on the list and if it's so unreliable why does plod rely on it to make such draconian decisions. :? :?

I suggest everyone coming to Wales in April check their bikes before they come

Looks like a phone call to the lovely Carol later today.

All my vehicles are on the database, even the 2 week old Honda which I have added to my BMW policy with Carol Nash. However I am changing it again today to a private number,so anything could happen. I will just carry the Ins. certificate with me till I am sure.
