Hello from across the pond

Postby teufelz99 » Tue Oct 30, 2007 2:18 pm

Greetings all. I'm a bit of a BMW fanatic and have been riding my K1200S for about a year now. I recently found a fairly high-mileage R1100S for a nice price ($6,000 US) with around 32k miles. Any ideas on reliability or is this thing gonna bite me in the butt with repair and maintenance costs? Looking forward to meeting you all, and hopefully snaggin the R1100 or buying a new R1200. I'll wait and pick your brains first. :)

Happy Riding!

Cool thread, inspires some confidence. My K12S has been very well-behaved in the maintenance dept so i am hoping the R1100 is as good as you all say it is. Looking forward to something a bit lighter as t he K12 is a bit of a monster, not to mention rather unfriendly in traffic. In other news I actually just booked a little vacation to the mother country for June 08. I'm dying to head up to scotland and visit my favorite distillery and im wondering if i box up one of the bikes and ship it or is there any way to rent one over there?

Thanks for the hello and sweet board. I'll be reading for a while.... great procrastination material.

Welcome to the site. Don't worry about maintenance costs. Most jobs can be attempted yourself using only a hammer and stuff you would normally find in your cutlery drawer at home

Cheers,

Paul
You really need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.

Hi there and welcome to our friendly family.

I have owned 2 BCR's in the past and am still tempted to buy another after riding an R1100S for the last month.

I have a K1200S, had some big problems with it but they are now fixed.

If you managed to get to Scotland next June please let me know so we colud possibley have a meet up as for my sins I live there.

Would love to meet up, especially with someone who knows where he's going. I actually have a ticket to see The Glenlivet Distillery which includes a personal tour. I knew I wanted to see Scotland, and figured why not make a trip of it and do it on a bike. I hope the weather works out, but i am told by some well-traveled friends that June should be nice.

Know anything about getting a bike over there?

I should be picking up the R1100S sometime in the next week or so. Just got off the horn with the current owner and made him an offer. I'll post some pics once it's in my possession.

Well the weather can be hit or miss in Scotland, but you will still have a great time. I can look into bike hire if you want.

When in June are you coming?

The reference to "wee beasties" is to the annoying, blood sucking creatures commonly found in Scotland but in June there should not be too many Welshmen so you should be O.K.

(This is a JOKE! - not to be taken seriously by those of a thin skinned disposition, there is NO need to fall out with me or sulk!)

Seriously, Scotland is famed for glorious scenary, rain, beautiful roads, more rain, rain, rain, rain and rain and MIDGES which are said to make life hell for some people although I have never been bothered by them on my frequent trips north of the border.

Clarification

Postby teufelz99 » Mon Nov 19, 2007 1:29 am

Thanks for the "wee beasties" clarification. Yes, The Glenlivet is perhaps one of, if not my favorite beverage especially once it starts getting brisk. The R1100S is on the truck. It's red, with a silver panel down the middle. I think it's rather smart looking. Similar colors to the candy cane R1200S but different pattern. I will post pics as soon as it arrives here from the dealership. It turned out that i found a deal on it. 3k miles, 2004, $6,500 US. Not bad methinks.
