R1200S Production Stopped
According to this weeks MCN, BMW have halted production of the R1200S, and a couple of other models, due to low demand. Apparently they have produced enough to last through 2008. People don't know what they're missing
...or maybe even a collectors item...

Although BMW claims it has been making Boxer twins continually since 1923, production stopped for a few months in 1986 when the company decided its future lay in triples and fours. Customer outrage persuaded the Germans to restart the twin-cylinder engine production lines.

I could have told the clueless marketing planners that the sportsportsport and nowhere to put any panniers marketing-plot would not work.It's is a shame for an otherwise excellent bike.I don't want to sound like a broken record but if they would have sold the R1200S as it was and another version as a true sport-touring replacement of the R1100S,with bigger tank,2 up seat,luggage rack,full size bags and center stand,it would have been a sales success instead of being out of production...
Now more than ever with the HP-S being out as a very trick but expensive boxer-twin-superbike they need to bring a sport-tourer,worthy replacing the R1100S
The R1200S as a sport-only bike did not attract enough BMW riders who currently still ride the R1100S and converted not enough Ducati or GSXR1XXRR-folks to become R1200S riders.The R1200ST was also a failed and sorry attempt to become the intended R1100S/RS replacement...
No with a truly exciting DOHC HP-Sportboxer out hopefully the come with a equally exciting sport-touring version worthy of replacing R1100S/RS and R1200S(T)
Too bad the R1200S had such a short life.It is a nice bike but unfortunately it was only allowed to live up to 20% of it's true (sales) potential.Looking at the R1100S 80% opting for the full on Sports-touring version and maybe 20% going for the solo only no bags/centerstand "sports" only version...

Maybe they should hire some real motorcycle guys for management positions instead those know it all know nothings with fancy degrees...

No I told you so or bonus points but it was certainly no certanty otherwise you guys wouldn't have beat me up so much for speaking out virtually at least...
Just sad to see a really good bike die so young only because of the stupidity of some empty suits.
The R1200S could have been a worthy replacement for the R1100S...
Now we are still waiting for one.
At least it seams ,except for pricing ,they got the new dohc sportsportsportsportboxer darn right!Really a dream come true but a little to focussed for me.A like a little dose of practicality too so I'm waiting for the sports-touring version,if there ever will be one.

The question is whether or not production has been stopped or just paused.
My copy of MCN had a typo. The three bikes were quoted as being the R1200S, K1200R-Sport and the R1200S (again!). I suspect that a T was missing. The R1200ST production has been stopped for ages and my information is that it is that bike that has been the subject of "Special Editions".
If BMW manage to get the HP into full production at the retail price that is suggested (which is extremely doubtful), then it pretty much makes the R1200S redundant. If that is correct, then there is a very large gap between the RT and the HP. I would suspect that there is some product re-alignment underway.

R1200S not dead...?
Yes maybe it is too early for R.I.P but except fo the price and the fact that they finally found panniers even if they too small to put on the R1200S why would anyone buy one where the exciting HP-S is out.Price?Maybe.Bags?Maybe.
But sales that havn't been brisk won't be any brisker for sure.
BMW needs to fill the void left open by the demise of R1100S and R1100RS.A sporty bike that also can be used for touring duties...
A RT or GS is not the answer.
Too big and upright or too upright and tall.Maybe the R1200R could fll in but not everyoe likes naked bikes and their lesser wind protection.
Hopefully BMW turns the R1200S into the R1100S successor it should have been from day one!That thing will sell!
Or they take the HP-S platform,junk the carbon fibre for plastic,leave the dashboard off,pt the 23 liter endurance tank on it,seat,luggage rack,centerstand like th F800 and bags from the RT plus the new DOHC 1200cc boxer and have a bike even VFR and Sprint ST rider would dream about...
One thing for sure they need to fill the big hole with an exciting sports-tourer because R1100S and RS riders havn't bought the R1200S or ST as they (BMW) hoped for...
Anyways patience is a virtue...

Winger maybe not you but obviously a lot of other people like that kind of practical junk otherwise the R1200S would be still in production because it could have been the best sport-touring bike,period.If they had offered a little more junk for it...
PS:Help me?What is so wrong with hard,waterproof panniers compared to soft luggage that can leak,burn,flop or get ripped off?
Also a luggage rack if you want to take the missus and a tent instead of the tent and blow up doll... ?And what is the problem with a centerstand if it is designed rifgt and doesn't scrape?
The penalty is maybe 2 pounds.A very cheap price to pay for all the practicality when it comes to parking or servicing the bike.
I know Rossi doesn't need one but I don't have a crew waiting for me when I come into the pits...
