Rear Shock
Mine is fine in performance terms... (10K miles) . but actually shitty in appearance. There was no rear hugger fitted.
Is it relatively easy to get out.... If I take out all preload.. do I need to compress the springs in any way... or will it come out without removing half the bike.
I just want to spruce it up.. it looks a mess.

Stuart,
The rear shock comes out very easily (rear wheel removed and swing arm hanging free).
If the bolts haven't been moved in a few years - you may need some WD40 or similar as the steel/alloy interface may be tight.
Give the bolts a smear with Molykote, grease or vaseline
when re-fitting.

If I am ever on life support - Unplug me......
Then plug me back in..........
See if that works .....

rear shock bolt - what size socket?
I'll be replacing my shock but is the bottom shock bolt supposed to be 14mm, my rounded edge socket seems a bit too loose!

Just picked up on what Jason has said. I've got the Remus system and am just about to replace the rear shock. Looked last night and yep the exaust needs to come off to get to the lower bolt. What a palaver ! What needs to be dismantiled to get to the bolt that secures the end cans to the frame ? I was thinking of splitting the exhaust at the y-piece via the 4 M6 bolts and taking the whole thing off rather than trying to separate the individual pieces. Is this the best way ? Any advice appreciated.
Cheers

Also If I remember rightly.... there is no bolt under the seat.... the silencers simply sit on two pins with rubber mounts... the bolt being on the down pipe.

I had a very frustrating afternoon when I had the rear shock fitted. Remus had to be removed. Cans come off with down pies quite easily but prior to that the plasticine bolts used to attach rear part of system to header pipes all sheared off. Luckily Tim Rose who fitted the EMC shocks had oxy acetylene in his garage and it only took just over an hour using a combination of extreme heat, penetrating oil and a gentle hand with some mole grips to work out each bolt!
The trick Tim showed me was understanding when the bolt shaft was twisting as opposed to the bolt moving slightly out of the socket. After that he re tapped the screw holes and used some decent bolts. The actual shock change and re-attachment of the exhaust, bodywork etc was pretty straightforward.
Also don't forget the gasket at the join.
Sounds as if Steve was lucky, I hope you have his luck otherwise its complete removal to sort out the sheared bit, depends on your bolts I suppose,

Yeah, these little M6 bolts are a real liability. You need to replace with stailness and lube with copperslip. If I undo the 4 M6 bolts I understand that the rear part of the exhaust system should drop a little enabling me to get to the lower bolt of the rear shocker. I take it there is no possibility of anything else breaking off at the end cans ? I've got to get cracking with this soon as the bike has done over 44K on the standard front and back shockers. It would be interesting to know what mileages others on the site got from the standard units before changing. I'm a tight sod so I've just kept going even though the units are well past their best.

Do you mean that when the 4 M6 bolts are removed the rear part of the exhaust still does not move ? It only has to move a little bit to get the lower shock bolt out. I don't want to start doing this job until I am sure I can get the rear shock out without dismantling the entire rear section of exhaust.
