Gearbox Drain plug seal

Hi

After getting the oil from JoeC, I made the call to change the gearbox oil today. Undone the very large drain plug etc and notice that the plug was not fitted with a sealing washer, is this correct, or should one be fitted.

Before you ask, I did the job after the dealers had shut and I had what I believed to a full set of sealng washers for the engine etc (or maybe not as the case may be).
So before I put the oil, is one fitted or not.

From memory it has a strange lip on the bolt head. I think one is fitted but it isn't standard.
I never replaced one on mine in 125K miles!

You are correct the head of the bolt does have a funny lip, while you have not replaced it, is yours fitted with a sealing washer. ??

No sealing washer other than what you can see. I haven't owned an S for over 3 years so I'm doing this from memory!

Today I have mostly been removing the gearbox from my GS after the bearings have gone tits - it's only done 30k too. The bearings in the S lasted till about 130k.

Any road up, the queerbox drain plug, like on the S, does not have a washer, probably due to the large mating surface (oh er) it has on the box.

Coincidentally I have been changing all my oils today... having got a service kit etc etc.. I did not think I had to buy a mother of an allan key to get the gearbox drain plug off. I have quite a comprehensive tool kit but no tool for that beastie.

What size is it and why is it not mentioned in any of the manuals. Can I chop the end off a box spanner... will it be strong enough????

14mm. I bought one for a socket set 3/4" drive and bent a extension bar so that it fits around the exhaust.

Bailey's cheap fix....get a short bolt with a 14mm head, then get 2 nuts onto said bolt.Tighten one against the other so they can't come undone(the old locknut routine!). Use ta spannah on the locknuts....hey presto!

BigBlackfalco, I will give that a try but I will buy an allan key or preferably a socket driver if there is one.

BTW... When I changed the engine oil... the colour was a ruddy brown... not the normal black tinge you normally get from well used oil.

I only changed it because Vines had said they had done a full 6000 mile service when I bought it.. but the air filter was knackered... Whether this would be changed or not, I assumed they would change this as it was so bad..But NO!... So I thought I would do a complete service.

I assume they had changed the oil... so this has done about a 1000 miles since new...BUT ruddy brown... no frothing felt very viscous still... but the colour...ANY IDEAS folks??? :?: :?:

Doesn't brown spell water?

BTW I got a 3/8 14mm hex. You want to get a 2 pt plastic milk bottle, cut the blunt end off at 45 degrees and us it to direct the oil from the gearbox to a container. Straight down from the hole is the exhaust and it makes a right royal mess if you drain it over that :shock:

Jason, Cheers I was all set to use a piece of rubber matting I have... until I saw the size of the allen key needed.

I thought you might say water.... bloody hell.... the fact there was no frothing makes me feel better.. but I will keep an eye on it. I've changed many a gallon of oil... but have never seen this???

Stuart - how much use does the bike get? Does it sit for periods during big temperature changes? Might be the result of condensation or something simple like that. Don't suppose it's much to worry about :wink:

gearbox drain plug

Agricultural machinery calls for the right tools.

I changed the gearbox oil while doing the 12K service on my Boxer Cup and used Stillsons for the plug!!

Only a couple of teeth marks that you can hardly notice. Tried the bolt head with nuts attached but it was F.tight!! :x

Good as new now
