No, no the cat was removed at 1000 miles.
I can prove the carbtunes accuracy by changing the suction pipes from left to right and right to left.
As a last resort I will play with CCPs. I am not prepared to cover another 5000 miles with a numb hand to try to eliminate the vibration. Yes I may want another bike, but the easy thing would be to go out and buy one. Could be that the reason for wanting another bike is the vibration.

It's a funny old game e'h,i'm not into BMW's,i'm not into aircooled flat twins, and god knows when i rode off down the road from my mates house when i bought my S 7 years ago was thinking what Feck am i doing with this bag of spanners, and spent the early years when this site was on Yahoo slagging it off!!!,i've stuck with it and glad that i have.

Madman

I'd sell it,what you discribe is pure S.

Bob, maybe you are simply gripping the bars too hard. First time I rode my S over 140kph, my hands would go numb in a few minutes. Then when I loosened my grip a bit, I never had it again.

Well it has turned out good in the end. I tried: no plug, made little difference, green plug, pins 30 & 86 connected, revved more easily but still vibrated, and brown plug, pins 30 and 87a connected, which seems to be more powerful and much smoother.
The bike, an 04 twinspark, had the gray plug, pins 30 86 and 87 connected, as standard.
I am so pleased that I tried this as it seems a different bike now.
I will play with Judes next which is an 02 single spark and has no plug fitted at the moment, but as it was bought secondhand, I am not sure if it had one in the first place.

And here is a short video of the test ride with the last plug in place.

Way to go!

How do you mount your camera? It seems to be very far forward?

I have posted a new thread on the blog showing the mounting and the links to a few other bike videos.
It is just forward of the top yolk, but it dies not vibrate as much there. I would like to mount it so that it does not turn with the bars or look through the screen, but that might be the next project after editing the videos.

Ah, cool. I use a sportbikecam.com mount on the tank filler, works very good and very little vibes. I do have to tolorate my gps coming partially in frame, but can't have it all yet.

Gonna move to a bullit cam once the money ship arrives.

Just to let you know that I have now covered a few hundred miles and the vibration is almost gone. I say almost, but that means that there is no more slapping of the right hand to get feeling into it anymore. The bike is so different that I will now keep it for a few more years.
One of the nice rides is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLPFr03apf8.
I love it now that the sun has arrived but the tourists have not. Note on the video that I only come up behind one car in the whole ride.

If I could just revive this thread a moment, does the same cat code experimenting or throwing away apply if you already have the Laser chip?
Other than info on how to fit it, I don't remember reading anything in the laser bumf about the plug. Does the Laser chip have several maps like the standard?
How do if we haven't met, mine's a twin spark by the way.

Hi madman
if i were you i would sell it. My 1150 r has 23k on the bike and the vibes are just *************. I have done the valves (many times) had the bmw people balance the throttle bodies. IT STILL VIRATES. My mate on a 1200 gs said if it were his bike he would get rid. All my mates that I ride with think the 1150 r is a great looking bike until I let them ride it ,then I get : I would not have ONE OF THEM . I have ridden many boxer engined bikes (not all mine this is my first BMW ) and they all seem to do the same thing. VIBRATE.

They've got two damn great cylinders, I'd sell mine if it didn't vibrate.
If it felt like a silky smooth 4 cylinder bike people would moan about it being underpowered and bland to ride instead.
Keep it lumpy I say

regabade, I was going to sell it, but now the CCP is sorted the vibes are almost gone and it is now no worse than the wifes' S. I am so pleased that I have no worries about long tours now.

madman wrote:The removal of the mounting bar on the Y piece also helped a bit, but again not much.
Thought I'd drag this thread back rather than start a new one.....

When you removed the mounting bar did you use an alternative means of support for the exhaust or just do without?

Over the winter I've changed some stuff on my S while it's been off the road. Had it set up on a dyno at PDQ (which I'll post details about seperately) on Friday but both before and after the dyno session I've been sufffering bad vibration over 5000rpm, seemingly concentrated around the footrests.

Mr Dyno man could detect the vibration but couldn't solve it through fuelling mods. I've checked valve clearances, fitted new plugs, re-balanced the TB's, and the vibes are still there. My feeling is that it may be coming from the Y-piece mounting bar against the frame (near the foot rests) despite the rubber mounts. Removing that bar seems to be an obvious thing to try but it's a non-reversible mod...... :? I did have the Y-piece off to fit the PC lambda sensor so it has been disturbed. The bike was smoother before in terms of vibration, if not in terms of power delivery.

Any thoughts, anyone?

Just cut it off both bikes with a small angle grinder. After a couple of years and many thousands of miles there is no problem and the exhaust is still as rigid as it was with the bar. The vibration did disappear from the footrests in Judes bike, but mine never had vibration there, only in the right handlebar which was sorted by the CCP.
