Bike Value

That time of year where my bike insurance is up for renewal.
It's an 11S, 2001 with 7500 miles on the clock and heated grips.

Call one dealer for an estimate of it's value - £6K
Called another - £4500K

Bit of a difference for 2 BMW dealers. Think I will go for £5K unless anybody thinks otherwise.
I am thinking of selling it so any ideas of the 'real world' price would help me.

Does not really matter what they value it at when you take out insurance. They will give you the least that they can get away with if you write it off and will take no notice of the value that they quoted when you took it out.

Problem is if you do not insure it for enough then they won't pay out higher if the bike is ultimatley worth more so am after a realistic value price to start with.

I'd guess private sale price is around £4k or slightly more, dealer price a bit above £5k. I've got my 2002 bike insured for £5k but would expect to be offered considerably less in the event of a claim. And of course that value doesn't (can't?) include all the goodies I've fitted - I need to speak to Auntie Carole to find out how to get all the 'invisible' bits covered.

after two crashes in 8 years I've had more paid out than I had as quoted on the policy in both cases.

I just had to provide evidence of the bikes current value, i.e. adverts to argue against their 'current value'

If the worst happens and you claim for the replacement cost......... and can't agree a value with the loss adjuster - ask them to find you a similar replacement. If they can't come up with some - it strengthens your argument for more money.

10 days ago I paid a BM dealer [SBW Hertford] £4495 for a 2003 grey/mandarin one. 18K miles, head protectors, touring panniers, belly-pan, 12 month "warranty", 12 month MOT and it hadn't turned a wheel since its 18K service [Oh, I forgot the two new tyres]. Dunno why it was so reasonable, as searching "Bike Trader" & "MCN" for weeks put the value well above £5K. They also had a really nice '04 red one [darker than the usual Kit Kat red] for £5.5K but that was a bit too much to justify to "HMV" for a second bike in the garage!

Because it's got 18k miles on the clock. Not a problem for an 1100S but high by most bike standards and that's how the price guides work.

I'd agree with that Sproggy, except that most of the 11S's for sale on MCN, Bike Trader and the official BM dealers site had similar miles or greater and were a lot more dosh [especially the main BM dealers].

Mind you, I'm not likely to put any more miles on it for a week or two, as I fell of a f**king ladder at work today and have twisted my sodding ankle! Bugger!

Got bike insured for £4.5K fully comp for £269.

This is fully comp cover with the same cover for an unlimited amount of other bikes (I also own a Fazer 600 - the best looking colour red/black), protected NCB, legal cover and class 1 business use (don't really need it but it comes with the policy).

Policy is for IAM members and was approx £100 cheaper than my current brokers renewel. Incidently, both with the same insurer Equity Red Star.

According to a bike trader friend a 2004 1100S with average miles books in the trade at about £4K
