Finally got my Dreambike - R1100S
Hi all.
I finally got my dreambike. A '99 black R1100S with heated grips, 5,5" rear wheel and some extra carbon parts. It has been my dreambike for several years, and many of my friends do not understand me, when I choose this, rather expensive, heavy bike, when I could buy some japanese crutchrocket for the same money.
I have driven BMW all my life. I started out on a R51/3, later on a R100RS and a F650 GS. Finally I had put enough money aside to buy my R1100S. I live in Denmark, and the Danish tax regarding vehicles are insane. You buy a bike, and then the IRS adds 180% of the price to the bike. So even though my bike is a '99 I had to spend 12.000 pounds on it. But.. it is definately worth it!
I have a question, which I would like a little help with. I am thinking of installing an alarm, to prevent people from tampering with, or stealing it. What alarm is the best?

Hi sva,congrats on your dream bike coz you and anyone in your country must be so dedicated to biking to spend all that money on wot is really not only a hobby but a bloody expensive one at that,i,m sure you'll enjoy it

Welcome to the group!
The best alarms are the Thatcham Cat 1 alarm/imobilisers, but you would probably need an authorised installer for them.
The best of them are:
Datatool 3 or 4
Meta 357T
Otherwise, you could do worse than an Acumen alarm/imobiliser, possibly together with a pager if you are close to the bike?

I have now had my bike for approx. 3 months, and I have spend around 5000 km in the saddle until now on long trips travelling between home and workplace.
I love this bike. It has enough power to move, but still it cruises like a dream which I like when driving 350 km straight.
I have changed Oil once. Went from 10W40 which the previous owner had used to Quaker State 5W40. I've read a lot of the oil threads but I can't see the red line in the threads. Some recommend 20w50, some recommend 10w40... My dad recommend 5W50.
I have also just bought a new tyre, which I am very excited about. The last 5000 km I've had a Michelin Pilot Sport in the back, and after reading a review of the Michelin Pilot Road 2 I wanted to try that one. Hope it doesn't send me of the road. But the profile of the Pilot Road 2 seemed to suit me a little better.
Otherwise.. I'm loving this bike.

SVA, the boxers require 20W50 per service manual for any somewhat decent temperatures (aka above freezing). Now the 20 isn't that critical, the 50 is. So the suggestion of 5W50 isn't so bad. That said, the boxer engines don't require expensive synthetics so the much cheaper 20W50 will work just as well.

New Tyre! Pilot Road II
I just changed my rear tyre. When I bought the bike it was fitted with a Pilot Sport, and after reading a lot about the Pilot Road II, I decided that this was going to be my new tyre.
So after fitting it on my 5,5" rear wheel, I took it for a spin, and oh my god a difference. The old tyre was really worn in the middle after a lot of looooong trips on the highway, and it was very stable... Actually a little too stable, because now it is still stable, but it corners like if it was on rails;-)
No complaints so far, but i'm not the type taking corners on narrow forest roads with 220 km/h, as I read some guys were bragging about. I like to find the edge on the envelope before crossing it:-)
