Grass (Man)

Postby Boxadog 2000 » Sun Jan 28, 2007 4:36 pm

Any green fingered folks amongst us.

My lawn looks like shite.

Odd bare patches and lots of moss.
Looked fine last year and has now deteriorated into a smaller version of the Some!

What do you do and when ?

Sits back and waits for ribald and piss taking

Lawns are one of my favourites. The best thing for them is regular mowing. I used to sell/service mowers and had a test lawn out back. Neighbours used it for foootball and always commented on it's finish. Dont walk on the lawn during bad, wet spells - kills grass. In spring, April, use B&Q lawn weed & feed or similar. Theirs' is quite a good price. Do what it says on the box. Ideally, you want regular rain thereafter, set the mower to about 30-40 mm cut height and mow as often as you can. Not just once every few weeks, I mean regularly. If the lawn has not had it in living memory, scarify it first. This is a labourious task of raking all the thatch and moss out of it. This also opens the ground a bit, allowing new growth.
Scruffy lawns benefit from a second weed & feed a couple of months after the first application. BUT beware, this artificial boost demands a price, I have found that after the drugs, the lawn will want further TLC; mowing, rain, hand weeding etc, or it will suffer in following years. If it is really bad, a new lawn may be the easy answer, ish. Get rid of all the grass top, prepare ground and get expensive lawn to put down. I have never done this, it's only grass! I have recovered what's there. Much cheaper.
Last note, old cylinder mowers will offer the best cut, hovers are easier to handle, rotarys will cut wet grass too. I have a rear roller Honda rotary with grass box, in my humble opinion, the best mower available.
See my website for info on fruit tree pruning and scallop fishing. :D

what he said re mowing. I use a company called greenthumb,
http://greenthumb.co.uk
they come and treat my lawns 4 times a year, and for less than the price of buying the feed from B&Q, I also scarify in late autumn, and aerate once every three years. if your lawn looked good last year, then it should'nt take too much to get back up to scratch, grass is very hardy and can recover very well given the right treatment/conditions.
If your lawn is uneven, then steer clear of cylinder mowers, as they will scalp it, which exacerbates the problem.

Thanks Oyster.

the Lawn is about 3 years old and has faired quite well intill this summer and the hose pipe ban.

I t has never been scaryfied just regular feed/weed and mowing as you describe, cant understand where the moss has come from.

Spent today aereating with a fork, will feed with the appropriate in a month or so.

not a very big lawn maybe 70ft by 18 ft but when I sit on the deck in the summer I do like to see a nice looking lawn.

Sad post I know but threre are people out there who have more knowledge about the green fingered stuff than me, and we are a bulletin board at the end of the day, so thanks to Oyster and anybody else with helpfull comments.

BoxerDog,.. the answer is quite simple. Marry any one of my ex-wives, .. as the lawn is obviously part of the 'Home',... as part of the decree absolute, .. it will inevitably become her problem to solve. :D

Bob

These guys work for me http://www.lawnhopper.co.uk/

Know their stuff and transformed my lawn despite my son and his mates abusing it to the max.

The downside it you get pretty anal about your lawn and end up chasing a bowls green finish by mowing at least twice a week.

What....... us? Never
but, isn't it amazing how you neighbours lawn always seems a better shade of green.........and you never see him scarifying or feeding.

My lawn suffered from dead patches. i was forever reseeding and repairing.
after the dog died it just got better on its own. My only problem now is should i plant a Magnolia in direct sun........or shade?

Anyway must dash......... I need to log on to the Gardeners World forum to ask about fully synthetic Oil and throttle body balancing on my R 1100s
