Boxer rebuild - advise please

Post by ChasesDragons »

:help:

Hi all,
I have come into a small amount of ££ allowing me to get a Supemoto and a long range CHEAP tourer. Could not think of a better choice than a R1100S or a F650GS.

I *might* have found a Stolen Recovered 2003 R1100S. I dont think it has got its keys with it. I thought I would buy a complete key and lock set from a salvage bike and fit it, but have Qs:

Does the R1100S of this age have microchip key sets? Is there going to be a different type of ignition key 'twixt the ages or between ABS and non ABS machines? Also noticed that this bike has a large letter "S" on the front fairings, over the "R1100". Is this some kinda special model, or was there some kind of loss of Germanic reserve when it came to style, on this age of bike?

Identical to this bike, I hope it doesnt open old wounds:

Oh yeah, the beers on me, if you do that thing in here.

Warmest Regards[/img]

Welcome to the house of insanity.

No microchip and keys from memory are alike to all models.

The big s on the fairing was a boxhead idea of styling.

Hi there and welcome,

Get it bought! (if cheap enough)
May be worth checking if its got standard or larger rear wheel (what section rubber?) See what extras it may have etc

I get my bike done at Jeffries in Shipley, dont know of any dealers in Lancs, other than the now infamous Williams.

I did spy the keys on Eblag. I might not be able to get my mitts on it on time, but time is on my side.

Regarding extras and tyres - I would be grateful for heated grips and centre stand, although I have an ABBA stand. But if it is in a salvage yarde, I am sure any goodies would have been whipped off by now. I notice the rear seat cowl was conspicious by its absence.

The bike had gone down on its side - I think the O/S rocker cover apparently needs replacing, I am assuming complete perforation than just scratches. But the plastics are all in one piece (there is a scratch on one...apparently).

If an R1100S goes on its side, like this, is there any other place that might have been damaged as well? Is it prone to chassis bending? Any simple way to check for this? Are there particular places a chassis would bend on a 1100S.

Any idea how I would check if it had gone through oil starvation - I am hoping that the engine stopped, by the time the rocker cover went boopsy...

There are about three or four bikes I am looking at. How do these cope with higher mileages? I can see a 2003 Blue one on Ebay with nearly 42K on it, Rainbow might let a 30k 1999 go for 3K (which I think is a bit bloody expensive).

mileage isnt a problem on them i theyve been looked after, although they suffer from problems like any other bike. Within 13k miles mine had a clutch slave cylinder go and a couple of other silly things, but there's people on here with bikes over 100K miles.
Check the frame where it attaches to the sub frame for broken lugs (4 of them). even if the rocker has gone through you should be able to start the bike an listen to it. Mine went rhough and was still running.
Look at the back of the bike from the rear and see if the sub frame looks offset ie bent
From the front on mine, the clocks fairing was bent and needed replacing (dear), chec the front plastics round the light look aligned.

Is this the same bike that is for sale at Cheshire Salvage in Macclesfield?
If so,just to let you know, I bought a GS1150 adventure from them about 18 months ago, which I repaired (sold it ages ago!) and it was fine, had no problems. Although people say that they are a bit expensive and will not haggle that much.
You can buy new locks/ignition & keys from motorworks, (not that expensive new) If you have 1 main lock and key to work from (maybe petrol tank?) you can put new barrels in the ignition a seat lock to match the original key.
